Synopsis

Nick Adams is a soldier recovering from a traumatic head injury. He goes from Fornaci to Fossalta di Piave by bicycle where he meets Major Paravicini, with whom he had served. He keeps having a strange recurring dream concerning a long yellow house and a stable by a river, and though he has no recollection of seeing them they frighten him. One day he wakes up in the company of some other soldiers, who are trying to establish his identity. After this he decides to return to Fornaci, though at the end of the story recovery is still a long way off.
