Adhikari in india are spread throughout Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Telangana and Karnataka. According to there history were by village chief Pedhakapu. They still have political influence, warrior cast. The story behind there surname is they were mantri's in the court of great maratha warrior Shiv Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. At that time their surname was JAGTAP and belonged to a village SASWAD near PUNE , during exapansion of his reign in the konkan region he went to Shaphur in Thane district and to look after the people, agricultural land, transport, he gave those responsibility of those things and warfare of that region to Jagtaps as it was an "Adhikar " given to them. Slowly they got there surname as ADHIKARI.

Bahun/Brahmin Adhikari
Some Brahmin from Rajasthan migrated to kumaun Uttarakhand and then to Nepal during the Islamic invasion. later, the regional kings and gorkha king gave them right of ruling some villages appointing them as local officers thus spreading to the western Nepal. Later they started using adhikari instead of there surname as it translates as ' one who has the right'. These adhikari belong to Brahmin caste.
Kshatriya Adhikari
Kshatriya(chhetri) adhikari are the descendant of those Kshatriya who got the title of ruling the land same in Nepal as Brahmin but Being a Kshatriya they continued there tradition of being a warrior. The crown family of Nepal today is kshatriya (chhetri). Being an Adhikari Chhetri, today, technically means you are a royal blood, although the royal family last name continues as shah.
