Etymology
Adoor is located in Pathanamthitta district and is a Major town in Central Travancore. Geographically it is situated between Trivandrum and Kottayam. Before the formation of Pathanamthitta district in 1982, Adoor was in Kollam district. Adoor's Assembly Constituency is a part of newly formed Pathanamthitta Loksabha Constituency.Later it was in Adoor loksabha constituency itself.
Mannadi, situated in Adoor is where Velu Thampi Dalawa, the renowned freedom fighter of Travancore and diwan (title)|diwan of Travancore Princely State, spent his last days. A historical museum, a statue of Veluthampi Dalawa and an open-air theatre are the major attractions here. The Kerala Institute of Folklore and Folk Arts functions here. The ancient Bhagavathy Temple at Mannadi has some exquisite stone sculptures. The annual temple festival is held in February/March. \
Demographics
As of 2001 India census,[1] Adoor had a population of 28,943, with males constituting 48% of the population and females 52%. Adoor has an average literacy rate of 85%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 49% of the males and 51% of females literate. 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Climate
Adoor has more or less the same climatic conditions as prevalent elsewhere in Kerala, with a dry season spanning December to February and hot season from March to May. The climate is generally moderate, with temperatures rising from 20 C to 39 C. The Monsoon#Southwest monsoon|southwest monsoon from June to September and the Monsoon#Northeast monsoon|northeast monsoon from October to November provide fairly good rain.
Railway
The nearest railway stations are at Kottarakara(20 kilometres),Chengannur (26 kilometres),Thiruvalla (33 kilometres) and Kayamkulam Junction(27 kilometres).
Airports
The nearest airports are the Trivandrum International Airport (100 kilometres) and the Cochin International Airport (150 kilometres).
