The Amazing Race 23 was the twenty-third installment of the reality television show The Amazing Race. It featured eleven teams of two people, each with a pre-existing relationship, in a race around the world for a US$1 million grand prize.

The season premiered on September 29, 2013, at 8 p.m. ET[Note 1]/PT on CBS, with the two-hour season finale airing on December 8, 2013.[1][2]

Dating couple Jason Case and Amy Diaz were the winners of this season of The Amazing Race.

Production

Development and filming

The season was renewed on March 27, 2013 for the 2013–14 TV season. A revised opening credits sequence and on screen clue information graphics were developed for this season with an updated map using 3D blue marble layout.[3]

The season spanned 35,000 miles (56,000 km) through four continents and nine countries, including Chile, Norway, and the United Arab Emirates.[4] The Double Express Pass, introduced in the previous season, returned – in which the first team to arrive at the Pit Stop on the first leg received two Express Passes, one for themselves and one to give to any other team.[3]

Cast

Applications for The Amazing Race 23 were closed on April 26, 2013.

The cast includes former Houston Texans players Chester Pitts and Ephraim Salaam, the wives of baseball players Chris Getz of the Kansas City Royals and David DeJesus of the Tampa Bay Rays, a pair of LA Kings Ice Crew maintenance workers, former Miss Rhode Island USA beauty queen Amy Diaz, former Minor League Baseball player and sports agent Tim Sweeney with former Lingerie Football player Marie Mazzocchi, and a pair of theater performers from the stage comedy The Queen of Bingo. Also childhood friends Brandon Squyres and Adam Switzer. Married emergency room doctors Travis and Nicole Jasper (and Travis's twin brother Travan) have also appeared on the docudrama series Untold Stories of the E.R.

Tim & Marie and Leo & Jamal were originally invited, while this season was still airing, for The Amazing Race: All-Stars. Tim & Marie turned down the invitation, but Leo & Jamal participated.

  1. ^ Nicole & Travis initially arrived 1st, but were issued a 30-minute penalty for taking a taxi to the Pit Stop when the clue stated that teams had to go on foot. Tim & Marie checked in during the penalty, dropping Nicole & Travis to 2nd.

Leg 1 (United States → Chile)

In the first Roadblock of The Amazing Race 23, teams paraglided down from Alto Hospicio in Iquique, Chile.

Airdate: September 29, 2013[6]

Teams started the Race from the Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio and were instructed to get their first clue using a Ford Sync system in the provided Ford C-Max. The clue told them to locate Javier in Iquique, Chile, using one of two provided flights from LAX. Teams found Javier at the Alto Hospicio, where they found their first Roadblock. The selected team member had to follow their partner, who would be tandem paragliding to either Playa Brava or Huayquique Beach and rejoin them to complete the task. Teams then traveled to Muelle Prat for the second Roadblock, to be done by the team member that paraglided. This person had to use a rowboat to find one of three marked boats docked nearby and get five fish, though each boat had a limited number of fish. Once they had returned to dock and hung all five fish, they got their next clue from the fishmonger, sending teams to the first Pit Stop at Teatro Municipal de Iquique.

Leg 2 (Chile)

The Detours in Chile's Atacama Desert revolved around the region's salt mining industry.

Airdate: October 6, 2013[7]

Teams headed to the Museo Corbeta Esmeralda, a retired boat of the Chilean navy, and search for a famous quote said at the Battle of Iquique by Arturo Prat ("¡Al abordaje, muchachos!") to repeat it to an officer on deck for their next clue. This directed teams to the Atacama Desert and their first Detour; for either option, teams had to ride provided bicycles to the task locations in the Tarapacá salt flats. For "Brining", teams had to add enough salt to a pool of water to allow them to float comfortably as judged by a foreman. In "Mining", teams had to break apart halite boulders with provided tools to find a capsule that contained their next clue. After riding back to the Detour start point, teams traveled by bus to the Plaza de Armas in the capital city of Santiago. There, the Roadblock required teams to take part as a lustrabota, a Chilean shoeshiner at Paseo Ahumada by shining a customer's shoes to their satisfaction, and then properly packing away the shoeshine stand and delivering it to a storage depot at Merced 738. Teams then headed to the Pit Stop at the Cascada de las Animas in San José de Maipo.

Leg 3 (Chile → Portugal)

One of the Detour options in Lisbon had teams measuring the distance traveled by Ferdinand Magellan on the map at Padrão dos Descobrimentos.

Airdate: October 13, 2013[8]

Teams traveled by air to Lisbon, Portugal and were directed to take a Lisbon tram from Martim Moniz Square to Miradouro das Portas do Sol and locate a group of Fado performers. The performers gave them a painting of the Embassy Coach sent by King John V to Pope Clement XI, which teams had to figure out referred to the Museu Nacional dos Coches where the coach was on display. There, teams obtained their Detour clue. In "Tiles", teams went to Fábrica Sant'Ana and assembled life-size puzzles of historical figured made from porcelain tiles. In "Miles", teams collected a giant compass from the Jerónimos Monastery and then used that to calculate the distance (within 500 nautical miles) traveled by Ferdinand Magellan on his famed voyage using the large map inset on the ground at Padrão dos Descobrimentos. From the Detour, teams traveled to Monsanto Forest Park for the Roadblock. The selected team member, after donned a suit of armor, had to use a ballista to fire an arrow through a shield 150 feet (46 m) away. Once hit, teams were given the shield that directed them to the Pit Stop located at Sintra's Castle of the Moors

Leg 4 (Portugal → Norway)

The Roadblock had teams jumping off of the Henningsvær Bridge, located north of the Arctic Circle in Norway, into the icy cold waters below. In the foreground are fish drying racks that were seen in both of the Detour choices.

Teams traveled by air to Bodø, Norway, and then by ferry to Svolvær in the Lofoten archipelago. At the ferry terminal teams found their Detour. In "Hang Your Heads", teams traveled to the L Bergs Sønner AS fish processor to string fish heads in six bundles of ten each, transport them by wheelbarrow up to a fish drying rack and then properly hang the fish on marked rods. In "Hammer of the Cods", teams had to retrieve 15 pairs of dried cod from the top of a fish drying rack, and then back at the fish processor, had to hammer the cod to make 1 kilogram (2.2 lb) of fish jerky. From the Detour, teams took a RIB to the Henningsvær fishing village's Rorbu. The Roadblock here required the selected team member to wear a wet suit and after being fitted in safety gear, bungee jump off Henningsvær Bridge. They then had to release themselves from the bungee cable, falling into the waters below and swim to a nearby buoy for their clue and to rejoin their partner waiting on the RIB.

Back ashore, teams were instructed to take a Ford Ranger to a nearby rock quarry, and hitch the truck to a sledge holding a granite boulder. They then pulled the sledge with the truck to reveal their clue to the Pit Stop, the Lofotr Viking Museum's Viking Longhouse, as well as a bag of Viking coins to be used later on the Race. Once at the Longhouse, teams discovered that they would then keep racing and were given their next clue.

Leg 5 (Norway → Poland)

The Roadblock in Gdańsk had teams searching for apartments in the half-mile long falowiec complex in Przymorze.

Airdate: October 27, 2013[10]

Teams continues racing by taking a ferry to Trondheim and then flying to Gdańsk, Poland. There, they had to find the Gdańsk Shipyard's Solidarity Square, which was the site of start of the Solidarity movement to find their next clue, sending to the Golden Gate at Gdańsk's Old Town and their Detour. In "Pose", teams had to wear costumes and pose similar to the figures on the Neptune fountain at the Long Market to earn at least 75 zł (approximately US$25) from passers-by. In "Polka", teams dressed in traditional Polish costumes and learned how to do a polka dance routine, which they had to perform to an instructor's satisfaction. In either Detour, teams were required to wear their costumes for the remainder of the leg. From the Detour, teams searched the Motława Riverfront and the Medieval Harbor Crane for their next clue, sending them to the Falowiec apartment complex in Przymorze. There, the Roadblock required the selected team member to visit one of twelve specific apartments to try a pączki pastry in order to find one with a red rose hip jam-filled center, while minding their manners. Once they found the right pastry, the resident gave them their next clue, directing teams to the Sopot Pier for the Pit Stop.

Leg 6 (Poland → Austria)

The gloriette of Vienna's Schönbrunn Palace was the Pit Stop for this Leg of the Race.

Airdate: November 3, 2013[11]

Teams traveled by train to Vienna, Austria, and headed to the Vienna State Opera to find a Rigoletto impersonator who then led the teams to the costume department and gave them their next clue, which included the Detour and the Fast Forward. The Fast Forward required teams to do a 500-foot (150 m) bungee jump from the Donauturm to the ground, but was dependent on the current state of windiness. The Detour option "Light Brigade" required teams to travel to the Ephesos Museum, dress as court servants, and assemble a crystal chandelier; if they had made any mistakes, the chamberlain would destroy the chandelier, forcing them to start again. In "Masquerade", teams headed to Palais Lobkowitz and chose a pair of colored masks to wear. They then had to locate a dancing couple out of dozens that wore matching masks to theirs. From there, teams went to the Palais Augarten for the Roadblock. The selected team member had to learn to sing Franz Schubert's "Die Forelle" with both proper tone and enunciation in German, and then sing it along with members of the Vienna Boys' Choir, to the satisfaction of the choir master. Teams were then directed to the center of the hedge maze at Schönbrunn Palace to find their clue to the Pit Stop, located at the palace's Gloriette.

Leg 7 (Austria → United Arab Emirates)

Upon arriving in Abu Dhabi, teams visited the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world.

Airdate: November 10, 2013[12]

Teams leaving Vienna's Stadtpark and flew to Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. From there, they traveled to the Sheikh Zayed Mosque to receive their next clue, the women put on abayas are permitted to enter. They were instructed to head to the Irani Souk to search for their Detour. In Sort it Out, teams traveled to Al Mina Vegetable Market and had to search through several types of dates to prepare an elaborate display tray into a correct order in order to receive their next clue. In Sew it Up, teams headed to the Dhow Harbour and had to put together a traditional fishing net. Once the fishing boat captain was pleased with their work, they would receive their next clue.

From the Detour, teams took a boat to Yas Island to a marina find their next clue for the Roadblock. The team member had to take a 200-foot (61 m) drop from the top of the Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel, rappeling down to ground. They then got into a Le Mans Prototype racecar and rode along on a lap of the Yas Marina Circuit. While in the car, racers had to look amongst signs on the track with drivers' names and lap times for the inaugural Abu Dhabi Grand Prix a time of 1:40.279 set by Sebastian Vettel. Once they told the pit crew chief the correct time and driver, he would give them their next clue. If incorrect, they would have to make another lap around the track. Racers would continue to make laps around the track until they got the correct name and time, the team directed to the champion's podium for the Pit Stop.

Leg 8 (United Arab Emirates)

Jebel Hafeet was the location of the Pit Stop on this Leg of the Race.

Airdate: November 17, 2013[13]

From the Pit Stop, teams received their clues and chose a Ford Explorers at the pit row garage to use the Viking coins from the Norway leg and decipher a numeric code to unlock that vehicle's doors, headed them to the Bou Thib Endurance Village in the Al Khatim Desert to use dune buggies and follow a marked course until they find a cluebox containing their next clue, directing them to the Al Ain Oasis, ordered they parked their cars at Al Ain National Museum to search their amongst several date palm trees. Teams then had to ask help from local tree climbers to get their Detour clue, took place at Al Ain's Al Jahili Fort. In Wedding Guests, teams had to prepare machbūs (traditional Emirati dish) for wedding guests. After gathering and cutting up all of the necessary ingredients, they put it into a large pot and then served a finished dish to a wedding party who would give them their next clue. In Beauty Contest, teams had found a camel that met a set of breed guidelines, and then dress it up for an upcoming camel show. If the judges were pleased with their camel selection, they would award the teams their next clue.

Teams then headed to Wadi Adventure for the Roadblock, and as well as the location of Speed Bump. The Speed Bump required the team to quickly swim their way across a generated wave pool, with a wave 6 feet high crashing down upon them once every 90 seconds until they made it up the ladder on the other side of the pool before moving onto the Roadblock. The team member had to ride down the largest man-made river rapids in the world and collect three flags each colored red, green, and black. Once they had all three flags, they were given their next clue, sending them to the Mercure Grand Hotel on top of Jebel Hafeet for the Pit Stop.

Leg 9 (United Arab Emirates → Indonesia)

The Roadblock in Bandung had teams putting together an angklung, a traditional Indonesian musical instrument.

Airdate: November 24, 2013[14]

Teams departed Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi Hotel and traveled to Bandung, Indonesia. They headed to Cileunyi and find Cikapandang ram arena to participate in a traditional West Javanese ram fight. After picking up two Priangan rams from a marked Kei truck, teams brought the rams to the arena. Once the two rams butted heads, they had to return the rams back to the trucks to receive their Detour clue, where they must take a train back to Bandung. In For the Elephants, teams visited Simpang Dago Market where they had to pick up eight watermelons, two bunches of bananas, one dozen sweet potatoes, and five strokes of sugar cane before heading to Bandung Zoo. Once there, they transported the food on a provided hand trolleys to the elephant enclosure, they then had to feed the elephants for their next clue. In For the Birds, teams picked up two matching peach-faced lovebirds from Kios Pak Dedi at Sukahaji Market and then took them to a bird song competition at the Sumber Sari Arena. After entering the birds into the competition, teams would have to get their birds to sing and scored to the judge that would receive their next clue. Teams headed next to the town of Padasuka for the Roadblock, that team member had to properly assemble an angklung (traditional Indonesian musical instrument made of tubes of bamboo). Once they had assembled the stand correctly and could play a complete octave, one of the students would give them their next clue, sending them to the Bosscha Observatory in Lembang for the Pit Stop.

Leg 10 (Indonesia)

This Leg's Roadblock had teams cooking hardboiled eggs in the hot springs of the Tangkuban Perahu volcano.

Airdate: December 1, 2013[15]

Teams headed to the town of Parongpong and find the Ciwangun Indah Camp's King Cobra House. Once there, they were told they had to eat a 20-centimetre (7.9 in) portion of grilled king cobra meat in order to receive their next clue, sending them to Tangkuban Perahu volcano for the Roadblock. The team member picked up 60 eggs from a foodstand and then took an 8-minute moped taxi ride into the Kawah Domas crater to use one of the volcanic hot springs to boil the eggs. After returning to the stand with the cooked eggs, the egg man would slice each of them open to see if they were hard-boiled in order to receive their next clue, which was the Detour. In Paint Your Partner, teams had to make each other up in traditional Javanese bridal makeup without a mirror. Once the beautician was satisfied with their work, he would give them their next clue. In Turn Over a New Leaf, teams dressed in the traditional uniform of the tea harvesters. They then had to search the tea plantation for a pair of clipping shears hidden somewhere from the tea plants which they could trade to the local tea plantation worker for their next clue. From the Detour, teams sent them to Curug Cimahi waterfall for the Pit Stop.

Leg 11 (Indonesia → Japan)

Upon arriving in Tokyo, teams traveled to the Gotokuji Temple, known for its extensive collection of maneki-neko statues.

Airdate: December 8, 2013[2]

Teams left Sheraton Bandung and traveled to Tokyo, Japan. Once there, they headed to the Gotokuji Temple known for extensive collection maneki-neko (beckoning cat) statues to search for their Detour clue amongst from the statues. In Knock It Down, teams had to pick up four pins from outside the Tokyo Media City studios and then participate in a Human Bowling game show, alternating sliding down on an inner tube into a set of pins. Once they got a strike, the game show host would give them their next clue. In Call It Up, teams participated in an art installation around Kinuta Park of obsolete phone booths filled with water and goldfish. The team member had to jump into the booth, dial a provided telephone number, and then listen to the provided message: "Welcome to Tokyo. Wasabi taberu." They then had to tell the message to their partner who had to run over to a judge to relay the message, they received their next clue.

Teams headed to Shinjuku Central Park for the location of the Roadblock, as well as the Speed Bump. The Speed Bump required the team had to join a group of zookeepers in an escaped rhinoceros drill until the "rhino" was captured. The Roadblock had the team member to put together a "robot" using a set of cardboard pipes, with only a miniature model as a guide. Once the engineer was pleased with their build job, they received their next clue. The clue directed teams to Shibuya and had to search the Shibuya scramble crossing for a roaming "vending machine" that held their next clue, directing them to the Konnō Hachimangū Shrine for the Pit Stop.

Leg 12 (Japan → United States)

In the Juneau Icefield, teams traversed the Norris Glacier (pictured with the Taku Glacier) for their next clue.

Airdate: December 8, 2013[2]

Teams traveled to Juneau, Alaska and upon arrival, they took a boat from Douglas Island to Mendenhall Valley for the Roadblock. The team member rode in a bush plane flying at 60 miles per hour (97 km/h) at least 150 feet (46 m) above the ground in a supply drop exercise, dropping a bag of flour onto a target on the ground. Once they hit the target, they received their next clue. The clue teams headed to the Norris Glacier in the Juneau Icefield where they must picked a mountain guide to help them reach the face of the glacier, crossing a crevasse and going through an ice tunnel along the way. They then had to search the glacier for their next clue frozen inside the glacier and then dig it out with a pickaxe. However, there were several false clues to search the glacier for the real next clue that instructed them to kayak out to a marked island that held their next clue.

Once at the island, teams took a helicopter to downtown Juneau, headed out to the Blueberry Hills Trailhead where they found their final task. Teams had to put together a wall of totem poles that spelled out the names of the currencies used in the countries they visited in the proper order:

Once they had the right order, they were given their final clue, instructing them to the end of the North Douglas Highway and then down the Outer Point Trail to the Finish Line.

Canadian ratings

Canadian broadcaster CTV also airs The Amazing Race on Sundays. Episodes air at 8:00 p.m. Eastern, Central and Pacific (9:00 p.m. Mountain and Atlantic) with one exception: Episode nine aired two hours earlier than its normal start time due to CTV's broadcast of the 2013 American Music Awards.
