Café Society is an upcoming 2016 American romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by Woody Allen. The film stars Jeannie Berlin, Steve Carell, Jesse Eisenberg, Blake Lively, Parker Posey, Kristen Stewart, Corey Stoll, and Ken Stott. The film will have its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on May 11, 2016,[3] and its North American premiere at the Seattle International Film Festival on May 19, 2016.[4] The film will be released on July 15, 2016 by Amazon Studios and Lionsgate.[5]

Cast

Production

By March 9, 2015, Jesse Eisenberg, Bruce Willis and Kristen Stewart were added to the cast of an upcoming Woody Allen film, which would be produced by Letty Aronson, Stephen Tenenbaum, and Edward Walson.[7] By May 6, 2015, Blake Lively was cast,[8] followed by Parker Posey by mid-July.[9] By August 4, 2015, more cast was added, including Jeannie Berlin, Corey Stoll, and Ken Stott, along with Anna Camp, Stephen Kunken, Sari Lennick, and Paul Schneider.[10] In August, Tony Sirico was cast to play Vito,[11] and Max Adler joined the cast.[12] Vittorio Storaro is the cinematographer.[13] On August 24, 2015, it was reported that Willis had exited the film due to his scheduling conflicts with the Broadway stage adaptation of the Stephen King novel Misery.[14] On August 28, 2015, Steve Carell joined the cast of the film to replace Willis.[15] In March 2016, the title was confirmed to be Café Society.[16]

Filming

Principal photography on the film began on August 17, 2015 in and around Los Angeles.[17] On September 8, 2015, filming moved to New York City,[13] where it was shot in Brooklyn.[18] Woody Allen has moved to digital for the first time, using a Sony CineAlta F65 camera for his 47th film.[19]

Release

In February 2016, Amazon Studios acquired distribution rights to the film.[20] In March 2016, the film was selected to open the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.[3] The film will also open the Seattle International Film Festival on May 19, 2016.[21] It was announced that Lionsgate will be teaming up with Amazon to release the film on August 12, 2016.[22] It was then moved up to July 15, 2016 in a limited release before expanding to July 22 and opening wide on July 29.[5]
