Steven Universe is an American animated television series created by Rebecca Sugar. It is produced by Cartoon Network Studios, and is the first show by the studio to be created by a woman.[1]

Main characters

Steven Universe

(Voiced by Zach Callison)[2] –The titular protagonist of the series, the enthusiastic, youngest, and only male member of the Crystal Gems who is loosely based on the series creator's younger brother Steven Sugar, a background artist.[3] Currently 14 years old (as of "The Answer" and "Steven's Birthday"),[4] he is the son of Greg Universe, who used to be a musician, and Rose Quartz, who used to be the leader of the Crystal Gems. Rose gave up her physical form so that Steven would be born as the first Gem-human hybrid entity and bridge the divide between humans and Gems. His gemstone, embedded in his belly button, is the rose quartz he inherited from his mother, which he can use to summon her shield and form a protective bubble around himself and anyone he cares about, while being sometimes capable of using healing powers in his saliva as well. Like Rose, Steven is caring, protective, gentle, and quick to forgive others. It is unknown if Steven can fuse with Gems, but so far, unlike Gems, he can fuse with humans; in "Alone Together" and "We Need to Talk", he fused with his friend Connie to form Stevonnie. He is musically inclined, as he loves singing and occasionally playing his ukulele. He is also motivated, meaning he's ready to go on any mission and can motivate his loved ones when they are in trouble. However, he can feel down-hearted sometimes, but despite this, he can still try very hard to protect his loved ones from any danger as possible.

Garnet

Main article: Garnet (character)

(Voiced by Estelle) — The disciplined current leader (in Rose Quartz's absence) of the Crystal Gems who is the strongest of the four, being silent at times yet often affectionate to her teammates. The episode "Jail Break" reveals that Garnet, having three differently colored eyes which she wears a visor over, is a fusion formed by the two Gems Ruby and Sapphire. Garnet would later reveal to Steven in "The Answer" that Ruby accidentally fused with Sapphire while facing Rose and Pearl during a mission on Earth, and she was the first fusion of two different Gems; this was unacceptable in the eyes of their leader, Blue Diamond, so Sapphire fled with Ruby to Earth's surface, where they fell in love with each other and again formed Garnet. Garnet was later found by the two Crystal Gems and was taken into the team by Rose, who accepted the fusion for who she is. Unlike other fusions, Garnet can maintain her form indefinitely due to her components' love for each other with her personality being a balanced composite of their conflicting personalities.[5] Because she is a fusion, Garnet has two red garnets, one embedded in each of her hands; she can use them to summon a pair of gauntlets, which are formed out of Ruby and Sapphire's weapons, and also uses Sapphire's ability to see possible future outcomes with her third eye. Garnet loves Steven deeply, and she accepts his ideas.

Amethyst

(Voiced by Michaela Dietz)[2] – The second-to-youngest member of the Crystal Gems. She has an amethyst embedded on her chest, which she can use to summon an energy whip. Unlike the other Crystal Gems, Amethyst was created on Earth as part of the Gem Homeworld's Kindergarten project to convert natural resources into a Gem-occupied world. While a quartz, a Gem warrior caste that are physically strong and use "spin attacks" on opponents, Amethyst was not fully developed in size, as revealed in "Too Far". Though taken into the team by Rose Quartz when found, Amethyst possesses a rebellious and childlike personality (which allows her to get along with Steven) and a bit of a self-image crisis that played in her using her kind's shapeshifting ability more often than the other Crystal Gems.

Pearl

Main article: Pearl (character)

(Voiced by Deedee Magno)[2] – The precise and intellectual member of the Crystal Gems who is a bit of short-tempered perfectionist and often tries to act as a strategist for her teammates. Her gemstone, which is embedded in her forehead, is a rainbow pearl that she can use to summon a spear and create holographic images. As revealed in "Back to the Barn", Pearl's name is actually a term for a caste of Gems on Homeworld who function only as menial servants, but Pearl, being a ward of Rose Quartz and the first of her known followers, rejected her caste role and trained herself to be a capable fighter and technician. However, during most the series, she is revealed to have romantic feelings for Rose, which she tends to instinctively project as a smothering parent with Steven. Pearl suffered insecurities over who she is without Rose before gradually becoming able to stand on her own two feet. Pearl really cares about Steven and can be overprotective of him, willing to protect him at any cost, because she thinks he is the most important member of the Crystal Gems. [6]

Peridot

(Voiced by Shelby Rabara)[7] – A former Homeworld Gem with a cranky, business-like demeanor. Her full name is Peridot Facet-2F5L Cut-5XG, and she has a triangular peridot embedded on her forehead. As a Peridot-type Gem, her body was outfitted with enhanced limbs to appear taller and defend herself. In "Warp Tour", the Crystal Gems see Peridot for the first time when she arrives to observe the status of the Cluster, a giant forced fusion forming in the center of the planet, and after she discovers their existence in "Marble Madness", she travels to Earth with her escort Jasper and their captive/informant Lapis Lazuli in "The Return" via a hand-shaped spacecraft. However, it results with her being marooned on Earth after she escapes through a pod as her ship is about to crash-land onto Earth in "Jail Break". Peridot makes attempts to contact her leader, Yellow Diamond, while trying to keep a safe distance from the Crystal Gems. The Crystal Gems eventually capture Peridot in "Catch and Release" by sending her into her gemstone, which is bubbled and placed in the temple, but she is later released by Steven so she can tell him about the Cluster itself. She then, in "Back To the Barn", chooses to form a momentary alliance with the Crystal Gems so they can together defeat the Cluster, first constructing a drill that will take them to its location. While still seeing herself as a Homeworld Gem, Peridot ends up becoming an official member of the Crystal Gems in "Message Received", when she openly defied Yellow Diamond's order to keep the Cluster active.
