Cosmo is a chain of buffet restaurants in the United Kingdom. Its branch in Valley Leisure Park, Croydon, was formerly the UK's biggest restaurant.[1]
The first location opened in 2003 in Eastbourne but now the chain has 18 restaurants: 13 in England, three in Scotland and one each in Wales and Northern Ireland.
Most restaurants have live cooking stations where customers can see food being cooked.[2]
History
The first Cosmo restaurant opened in Eastbourne in 2003. Between 2003 and June 2012 Cosmo opened in Bristol, Chatham, Coventry, Croydon, Romford, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Wolverhampton, and Swansea. A branch opened in Croydon in November 2011 and at the time was Britain's biggest restaurant with a seating capacity of 800.[3]
In July 2012, Cosmo opened a restaurant in Reading. It opened restaurants in Aberdeen and Belfast in October and November that year.[4][5]
In January 2013, Cosmo decided to sell its Swindon and Cardiff branches to a rival buffet chain. The company said the restaurants were no longer up to standard and they would rather sell than refurbish them. This was announced via its Facebook page. The company also announced that it planned to open in Derby, Doncaster, Nottingham and Edinburgh during 2013. The Nottingham branch is due to open in November 2014. The Leeds branch on Boar Lane closed in December 2014 due to a burst water pipe and not scheduled to reopen until February 2015. The second Leeds site at the Arena Quarter was due to open Summer 2014 but as of 2015 it remains empty. [6]
Menu
The restaurant has over 120 dishes from nine countries: China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Mongolia, Singapore, Vietnam, and India.[7] Examples of dishes include sushi, sweet and sour pork, pizza, salmon fillet in black bean sauce and Chicken Korma.[8]
