History
In 2012, The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) created the cricket tournament Bangladesh Premier League based on the Twenty20 form of the game. For the inaugural tournament held in February of the same year, a list of 6 teams who will be participating in the tournament was finalised. The teams representing 6 different divisions of Bangladesh, including Dhaka, were put up on auction in Radisson Hotels on 19 January. Dhaka Gladiators was bought by Red Citi Group for a price of USD 1.05 million (BDT 8,40,00,000)
2012 season
Dhaka Gladiators started off their campaign disappointingly by losing against an experienced Khulna Royal Bengals which was led by all rounder Shakib Al Hasan. However this was succeeded by three consecutive wins even without players like Shahid Afridi and Saeed Ajmal. During their third win over Barisal Burners, they made the highest total of the tournament by scoring 208 runs for five wickets. They defended this score, even though Chris Gayle scored a century for the Barisal Burners. Later in the tournament, they failed to chase mediocre targets due to batting collapses. In the final, Dhaka Gladiators beat the Barisal Burners to be crowned champions of BPL 2012.
2013 season
For the 2013 season, Dhaka Gladiators bought Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan who was the most expensive player in the tournament. They bought star fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza, the emerging wicket keeper Anamul Haque and the talented spinner Mosharraf Hossain. Overseas, they bought South African T20 star Alfonso Thomas, and West Indian hard hitters Kieron Pollard and Chris Gayle who were only available for one game. They bought English stars Luke Wright, Owais Shah, Darren Stevens, bowler Chris Liddle and batsman Josh Cobb. This team of players were crowned 2013 champions, just as they had been in 2012. They played 14 games won 11 and lost only 3. This time their arch rival was Sylhet Royals. Their cricket match became an India vs. Pakistan competition.
Players
Mohammad Ashraful the former captain of the Bangladesh cricket team was the icon player for Dhaka Gladiators. The team was led by Mashrafe Mortaza in the inaugural season of the BPL. The team bought star players including batsmen Imran Nazir and Aftab Ahmed, all rounders like Shahid Afridi, Kieron Pollard, Mashrafe Mortaza, and bowlers of the likes of Saeed Ajmal, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and Stuart MacGill. Stuart MacGill Nayem Khan (N-Khan) could not play in the league for personal reasons so he was replaced with the experienced player Azhar Mahmood.
