Newscycle is an American software development company offering global technology products for the news media industry. The company specializes in comprehensive media solutions for both print and digital publishers. Newscycle provides cloud-based enterprise solutions in circulation management, advertising, analytics, content curation, cloud migration, pagination, and customer relationship management.
Headquartered in Bloomington, Minnesota,[1] Newscycle formed following the merger of Digital Technology International (DTI), Saxotech, Atex, Inc., and MediaSpan into one organization.
Currently, Newscycle operates US offices in Minnesota, Florida, Michigan, and Utah; with international offices in Canada, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Panama, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.
History
Newscycle formed in July 2013, following a Vista Equity Partners’ buyout and subsequent merger of Digital Technology International (DTI) and Saxotech.[2] At the time, both companies specialized in news media solutions focusing on circulation and subscription management, editorial workflow and web content management.[3]
In November 2013, Newscycle added Atex’s advertising platform. The end-to-end advertising system AdBase, manages all digital, radio, broadcast, and print advertising for media companies.[4]
Newscycle rounded out their acquisition run with the purchase of Michigan software company MediaSpan, and their suite of cloud-based software, in May 2014.[5]
As of March 2015, Newscycle’s solutions are active on more than 8,000 media properties, serving 750 media companies in 30 countries across the globe. With the current organizational infrastructure, Newscycle claims to deliver the most complete range of software solutions within the global news media industry.[6]
Media Industry
As a member of the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), Newspaper Association of America (NAA), and the International News Media Association (INMA), Newscycle works actively with customers and prospects in the publishing industry to guide their product and services evolution.
92 of the top 100 newspapers in the United States are currently Newscycle customers, who are highly regarded contributors to news media, often recognized for their innovation:
Fairfax Media in Australia won WAN-IFRA's 2014 award for Best in Tablet Publishing.[7]
As Newscycle customers, past INMA Award Winners include U-T San Diego, The Sacramento Bee, Boston Globe, and San Francisco Chronicle were recognized for their achievement in news publishing sales and marketing.[8]
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution was recently nominated for 2015's 'Best New Print Product.' [9][10]
Vista Equity Partners
As a leading private equity firm, focused on software and technology-enabled businesses, Vista Equity Partners has helped merge the current corporate structure of Newscycle from four distinct partners:
- Digital Technology International (DTI) - Formerly PBS (Publishing Business Systems), DTI served a fully integrated publishing suite for news media systems, integrating solutions for content, display, advertising and analytics.
- Saxotech - Founded in Alborg, Denmark in 1993 by Werner Elhauge and Peter Greve, Saxotech developed a news industry pagination system based on QuarkXpress for Mac. Prior to Saxotech's innovation, news publishers were still using paste-up boards to build newspapers.
- Atex AdBase - The company was originally founded in 1973 by MIT graduates Richard and Charles Ying to build an electronic composition system for publishers. Prior to acquisition, Atex AdBase served 220 media companies in 14 countries as a cross-channel advertising and CRM platform.
- MediaSpan - Officially founded in 2006, following the merger and rebranding of Harris & Baseview, MediaSpan developed a series of unified products to help service the day-to-day needs of medium to small-market newspapers. Focusing on turn-key and SaaS products, MediaSpan offered easily deployed solutions at a cost that smaller publications could afford.
