Dilsukhnagar is one of the largest commercial and residential centers in Hyderabad.[1] It was once part of the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad, but later merged with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation.
History
The name "Dilsukhnagar" is derived from Dilsukh Ram Pershad, an agricultural land owner who lived around Malakpet. It is said that he subdivided his land into plots and built a colony which he named Dilsukhnagar.
Dilsukhnagar was once a purely residential suburb; however, in the last decade strong economic growth has transformed it into a major commercial hub.
On 21 February 2013, at around 7:05 PM, two blasts occurred in the area: one in the vicinity of the Konark and Venkatadri movie theaters and the other near a busy bus stop. Sixteen people were killed and at least 118 were injured. Indian mujahideen were suspected and the blasts are thought to have been meant as revenge for the executions of Afzal Guru and Ajmal Kasab in Tihar Jail on 13 February 2013.[2][3][4]
Commerce
Dilsukhnagar is a busy commercial hub in Hyderabad. The Dilsukhnagar Bus Stand, termed the "floating population", attracts migrants from the rest of the country. Retail giants like Titan, Domino's, Megamart, More, Croma run successfully on the Dilsukhnagar - LB Nagar stretch. Restaurants like Swagath, Papadam's Blue, Green Leaves, Paradise and Bawarchi also offer their services.
Administration
Dilsukhnagar merged into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation in 2007 after an order from the Government of Andhra Pradesh. It is a part of the Malkajgiri Lok Sabha constituency and the L.B. Nagar constituency of the Telangana State Assembly.
Transport
Dilsukhnagar is well connected within Hyderabad. The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation has bus routes to areas such as Ghatkesar, LB Nagar, Pathancheru, Nagole, Secunderabad, and Kothi. Additional buses are available from the DSNR bus depot P. Traffic congestion is relatively common in Dilsukhnagar.
The nearest Multi-Modal Transport System station is at Malakpet. Dilsukhnagar also hosts a Railway Advance Reservation Booking Office. The nearest airport is Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.
Dilsukhnagar should have further connections once the Hyderabad Metro is completed.
