George Bruce[1] was the Bishop of Ontario[2] from 2002 until 2011.
Born in 1942 in Ely, Cambridgeshire, England his family emigrated to the United States in 1953. From 1959 until 1986 he served in the Canadian Forces. He holds a degree from the Royal Military College of Canada, Kingston and was ordained the following year. He began his second career with a curacy at St Matthew Ottawa[3] before being appointed Rector of Winchester, Ontario and then St. James the Apostle, Perth, Ontario. In 2000 he became Dean of St George’s Cathedral before being appointed Bishop of the Diocese two years alter. A reflective man,[4] Bishop George is married with five children.
During his time as bishop, Bruce was alleged to have been a party to a cover-up of serious child abuse within the Anglican Diocese of Ontario. The Diocese has been the subject of several child abuse lawsuits and a criminal trial over the years. Corruption in the Diocese' hierarchy has been alleged. One of Canada's national networks, CTV, aired a documentary film about the abuse on the W5 programme called "In the Name of God", which was released on February 6, 2016 to coincided with the launch of the book, "Grenville", by Andrew J.
