Ilkeston railway station is planned to serve the town of Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England. It will be located on the site of the former Ilkeston Junction and Cossall railway station. It is to be served by Northern Nottingham to Leeds services and possibly by East Midlands Trains. It will be located between Nottingham railway station and Langley Mill railway station.

New station fund

As part of the new station fund set out in March 2013, Ilkeston, Pye Corner and Lea Bridge were narrowed down as the three most likely stations to open or reopen, with the final announcement in May 2013.[1][2]

Funding was confirmed in May 2013, with the station planned to open in 2014.[3] It will have two platforms, automated ticket machines, a 150-space car park and a taxi rank.

Construction delays

During preliminary work at the site in June 2014, an ecological survey found protected great crested newts, delaying the start of construction until October 2014. This, together with additional flood protection work means that the station opening is deferred to spring 2015.[4]

In October 2014, it was announced that the cost of proposed flood protection work exceeds the available budget, requiring a cheaper solution to be found. This further delays the start of construction until 2015, and the earliest opening date to 'late 2015'.[5]

In February 2015, it was announced that more great crested newts had been found, further delaying work on site. The opening is now expected to be by August 2016.[6]

An unofficial website monitoring and reporting the progress of the construction was set up. Articles from local residents and business owners have been written with the inclusion of video footage of some of the construction work.[7]
