Atal Bihari Vajpayee Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Gwalior (Hindi: भारतीय सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी एवं प्रबंधन संस्थान, ग्वालियर, IIITM Gwalior), commonly known as the Indian Institute of Information Technology and Management, Gwalior or ABV-IIITM is a university located in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, India, and one of India's Institutes of Information Technology. Established in 1997 and named for Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the institute obtained the status of Deemed University in 2001 and was recognized as an Institute of National Importance. The university campus is spread over 160 acres (0.65 km2) in the foothills of the Gwalior Fort.

History

The foundation stone of the institute was laid on 17 January 1996.

Beginning

The IIITM was established by the government of India in 1997 as a part of a series of IIITs, to foster higher education in Information Technology. IIITM was declared an institute of national importance and was provided autonomy to choose its courses and curriculum.

The All India Council for Technical Education established a working group in 1995 consisting of professionals, academics and others in the areas of IT, management and communications, to deliberate on the issues relating to IT and prepare a theme paper. This group prepared a document underlining the need for the establishment of a National Centre in the area of IT; hence the IIITs were started in the country.

Founding Committee

In 1992, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) set up a committee under the chairmanship of Dr. P G Reddy, to study the country's infrastructure with regard to software education and training. The committee identified the total manpower needed for software development, domestic and export, was 570,000 by 1996 to meet a target of software export of Rs. 100 billion. The existing formal educational system would produce only 120,000 personnel by that time. The team recommended setting up Advanced Information System Institutes on the pattern of IITs and IIMs in the country.
