WAP 5 is the name of a class of High Speed electric locomotives used by Indian Railways. The first 11 locomotives were imported from ABB in Switzerland in 1995 (one loco 30008 was damaged in a fire accident). They have Bo-Bo wheel configuration. They are supposed to be a variant of the Swiss Lok 2000 (Design Concept) and German DB Class 120 (mechanical chassis). Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) started production in 2000.

WAP-5 can deliver 6,000 hp (4,500 kW) maximum, with regenerative braking as one of its notable feature. Other notable features of this locomotive are the provision of taps from the main transformers for Head end power (HEP or Hotel Load), pantry loads, flexible gear coupling and wheel-mounted disc brakes. Braking systems include 160 kN (36,000 lbf) regenerative brakes, loco disc brakes, automatic train air brakes, and a charged spring parking brake.

On 3 July 2014, a WAP-5 set an Indian speed record by hauling a train from Delhi to Agra at within 90 minutes at a speed of 160 km/h or 99 mph.[1]

The Bhopal Shatabdi and Gatimaan Express trains hauled by WAP-5 locomotives travel at 150 km/h (93 mph) and 160 km/h (99 mph) respectively in the New Delhi - Agra Cantt section.

Named Locos

200 km/h Variant

In October 2015, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works rolled out a WAP-5 locomotive (loco number 30086) with Alternate Drive Gear Assembly and gear ratio changed to 59:35:19 (3.105) along with changes in application software. This loco is suitable for 200 km/h operations (max 225 km/h).

The loco has got indigenous IGBT based propulsion system supplied by M/S Medha Servo Drives PVT. LTD.[2] It is currently homed at Ghaziabad Electric Loco Shed.

Air Conditioning

The original design called for these locos to have air-conditioned cabs. This, however, has been dogged by controversy over costs and fitment, and the first units made by CLW do not have air-conditioned cabs. One of the ABB units, No. 30000, does have air-conditioning, fitted by the Ghaziabad shed as an experiment.

However, many locomotives now have air-conditioning for the comfort of the loco pilots.

Hurth (Hirth) Coupling

After the first four were built, there seemed to be a pause in the manufacture of this class at CLW. A problem with the Hirth coupling its indigenous replacement seem to have been part of the delay, but the locally manufactured components passed trials and production resumed.

However, Hirth couplings are now, being replaced by Alternate Drive Gear Assemblies[3] designed by RDSO, in the newer locomotives. Hurth coupling has a rubber membrane where as Alternate Drive Gear system has combined curved tooth coupling/ring disc coupling, having no rubber membrane. First locomotive with the new gear assembly (no. 30056) is homed at Vadodara ELS.

Liveries

  1. Common livery for WAP-5 locomotives is white, with 2 red stripes.
  2. Recently, Vadodara Shed and Amul Milk made a contract of advertising 20 locomotives of Shed. Thus the Amul livery came into existence. The livery has the sides of locomotive painted in Amul livery. All the recent locomotives are being painted in this livery as part of contract.
  3. WAP-5 locomotives homed at Ghaziabad loco shed have large 'P-5' decals on their body sides.
