Jamie-Lee Kriewitz (pronounced [kʁiːvɪt͡s]; born 18 March 1998), professionally known as Jamie-Lee, is a German singer and activist. She rose to prominence after emerging as the winner of the fifth season of The Voice of Germany,[1] where she competed as one of the 17 composing members of Team Michi & Smudo.[2] Kriewitz's winner's single, "Ghost", peaked at #11, #65 and #26 on the GfK Entertainment Charts, Ö3 Austria Top 40 and the Swiss Hitparade respectively.[3][4][5] She then emerged as the winner of Unser Lied für Stockholm, Germany's preliminary decision for their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2016, and would represent Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 with "Ghost".[6][7]

Kriewitz released her debut studio album, Berlin, on 29 April 2016 under the Universal Music Group.[8]

Early life

Kriewitz was born on 18 March 1998 in Bennigsen near Hanover, Germany.[9][10] At the age of twelve, she joined the gospel choir Joyful Noise.[11] Her father played the drums in German punk rock band 3Zylinder;[12] however, the rest of her family is not musical.[13] Kriewitz has a preference for the Japanese Decora kei fashion style and for South Korean K-pop, with her favorites being the Korean boyband Block B. Generally fond of Korean culture, she originally intended to pursue a degree in Korean studies.[14] Living vegan since 2012, Kriewitz participated in the "Vegan life is the best life" campaign of animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).[15]

Career

2015: The Voice of Germany

On 15 October 2015, Kriewitz auditioned for the fifth season of The Voice of Germany with Jennifer Lawrence's song "The Hanging Tree" in the blind auditions, persuading all four of the coaches to turn their chairs - much to her surprise. She chose to become one of the seventeen artists of Michi Beck and Smudo's team. In the battle rounds, she was paired up against Meike Rosendahl and performed Lorde's song "Royals" on 20 November 2015, where both of her coaches have chosen her over Rosendahl. Kriewitz performed RY X's song "Berlin" in the knockout rounds on 26 November 2015, where she was selected with Tobias Vorwerk and Matthias Nzola Zanquila by both of the triumvate's coaches Michi and Smudo. In the live rounds, she performed Fahrenhaidt's song "Lights Will Guide Me" on 3 December 2015, where she was selected with Tobias Vorwek by both of their coaches. In the semifinals, she performed Imagine Dragons's song "Warriors" on 10 December 2015, where the audience have chosen her over Tobias Vorwek via public vote. In the finals, Kriewitz performed Die Fantastischen Vier and Seven's song "Name drauf", where she sang a duet with her coaches Michi and Smudo; Jess Glynne's "Take Me Home", where she sang a duet with the original artist herself; and her debut single "Ghost", for which debuted on record charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland at #11, #65 and #26 respectively. On 17 December 2015, she was declared the winner of the fifth season after receiving 38% of the public vote and became the first teenage winner of the whole competition.

2016: Eurovision Song Contest and Berlin

On 12 January 2016, Kriewitz was announced as one of the ten finalists for Unser Lied für Stockholm,[16] Germany's preliminary decision for their representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 in Stockholm, Sweden on 14 May 2016. She entered her debut single "Ghost". On 25 February 2016, she was declared as Germany's representative at the Eurovision Song Contest 2016 after receiving 44.5% of the public vote.[6][7] On 7 April 2016, Kriewitz posted on her official Facebook page after finishing recording her debut studio album, Berlin, and provided several links to websites where the studio album is available for pre-order. The recorded songs are all based on her experiences in The Voice of Germany.[8] On 11 April 2016, it was announced that Berlin would be released on 29 April 2016.[8] On 15 April 2016, Kriewitz announced on her official Facebook page that her debut single, "Ghost", was added as one of the tracks to be featured on the studio album and that Berlin's title track of the same name has become available for download.[17] On the same day, the compilation album Eurovision Song Contest: Stockholm 2016 was released digitally and featured "Ghost" as one of the first twenty-two tracks on the first CD of the compilation album.[18]
