Lab126, Inc is a subsidiary of Amazon.com, responsible for R&D that formed in 2004,[1] and widely known for developing Amazon's Kindle devices.[2][3][4] It is based in Cupertino, California and is headed by Gregg Zehr. Zehr was previously the VP of hardware engineering at Palm Computing.

The name comes from the fact that the numbers 1 and 26 corresponds to the order of the first and last letters of the English alphabet.

Projects

In addition to the Kindle e-readers, Lab126 is developing other "easy-to-use, highly integrated consumer products to serve Amazon customers".[5]

In 2011, Lab126 released the Kindle Fire tablet and in 2012 released two new models of the Fire tablet called the Kindle Fire HD.[6] In 2013, it released the Fire HDX.

In 2014, Lab126 released the Amazon Fire TV digital media player and in late 2014 released the Fire TV Stick.

In June 2014, Lab126 announced the Fire Phone that had cameras to track the user's eyes to give the impression of 3D and it was released in July.[1][7]

In 2015, Lab126 released the Amazon Echo, a voice command device. In 2016, it released the Echo Dot, which is hockey puck sized version of the Echo and the Amazon Tap, a smaller, portable version of the Echo.
