List of Sites of Special Scientific Interest in East Sussex

East Sussex, and its location within the United Kingdom

This is a list of the Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) in East Sussex, a county in South East England. East Sussex is bordered by Kent to the north, and Surrey to the south,[1] and has an estimated population of 757,600 within an area of 1,795 km2 (443,554.2 acres), therefore making it the 28th largest ceremonial county in the United Kingdom.[2]

As of 2008, there are 64 sites designated within this Area of Search, 46 of which have been designated for their biological interest, 14 for their geological interest, and 4 for both biological and geological interest.[3]

In England, the body responsible for designating SSSIs is Natural England, which selects sites because of their flora, fauna, geological or physiographical features.[4] Natural England took over the role of designating and managing SSSIs from English Nature in October 2006 when it was formed from the amalgamation of English Nature, parts of the Countryside Agency and the Rural Development Service.

East Sussex is, from a geological viewpoint, the southern anticline of the Weald. The South Downs contain numerous chalk hills, which continue along much of the southern area of the county. East Sussex is home to much marshland area, with large amounts to the east of Beachy Head.[5]

The data in this table is taken from Natural England's website in the form of citation sheets for each SSSI.[6]

Notes

A Data rounded to one decimal place.
B Grid reference is based on the British national grid reference system, also known as OSGB36, and is the system used by the Ordnance Survey.[7]
C Those SSSIs with more than one OS grid reference are composed of multiple sections, separated by non-SSSI land.[7]
D Site notification consists of designating a site as an SSSI and consulting with the owner(s). This list uses the date notified under Section 28 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

F Clayton To Offham Escarpment site extends into the county of West Sussex and so can be found on the list of SSSIs in West Sussex.[6]
