Toronto rapid transit is the system of underground and elevated railroad lines in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, operated by the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC). It was the country's first completed subway system: the first line was built under Yonge Street, which opened in 1954 with 12 stations. Since then, the system has expanded to become Canada's largest (in terms of stations) and second busiest rapid transit rail network with an average of 1,093,300 passenger trips each weekday (as of Q4 2014), after the Montreal Metro.[1]

The rapid transit system encompasses four lines and 69 stations on 68.3 kilometres (42.4 mi) of route.[2] An 8.6-kilometre (5.3 mi), six-station extension of Line 1 Yonge–University north to Vaughan is under construction and scheduled to open for December 2017.[3] The Eglinton Crosstown, a 25-station, 19-kilometre (12 mi) light rail transit (LRT) line, is under construction and scheduled to open in 2021.[4] In addition, the Finch West LRT, with 19 stations on 11 kilometres (6.8 mi) of track, will be constructed between 2016 and 2021.[5]
