Big Bang, a five-member South Korean boy band formed under YG Entertainment, has won numerous awards and recognitions since their Korean debut in 2006 and Japanese debut in 2009. Big Bang won most of their awards from South Korea, but they have also garnered many international awards and nominations from both Asia and Europe, notably the "Best Worldwide Act" award from the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards, received after their two-year hiatus from the K-Pop scene.[1]
The group's breakthrough hit was "Lies," which earned Big Bang their very first music program win, from KBS's Music Bank in September 2007, and high acclaim from music industry critics and professionals. The song garnered five more awards from music programs and topped all Korean music charts for seven consecutive weeks, a feat only achieved by Seo Taiji and Boys before, making it the "Song of the Month" for August and September. "Lies" won Big Bang their first major music award, the "Song of the Year" award from the 2007 Mnet KM Music Festival. They were then labelled as the "National Brothers" by the South Korean media and the general public.[2]
The group was further catapulted to a higher national status when their second hit song, "Last Farewell," was released. The song won Big Bang seven music program wins and topped all music charts for eight consecutive weeks, knocking themselves off from their own previous achievement.
Big Bang has also gained various recognitions for their unique fashion style during their live performances. Their fashion was imitated by many Korean teenagers and was then called as the "Big Bang fashion," a fashion consisting of a scarf, high-top sneakers, and shades.
