List of international cricket five-wicket hauls at the Wankhede Stadium
Wankhede Stadium is a cricket ground in Mumbai, India. This ground was built after disputes between the Cricket Club of India, which owns the Brabourne Stadium, and the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) over the allocation of tickets for cricket matches.[1] The dispute became severe after the Test between India and England in 1973. At the initiative of S. K. Wankhede, a politician and the secretary of the MCA, the Association built a new stadium in South Mumbai near the Churchgate station. The Wankhede Stadium was built in six months and opened in time to host the final Test between India and the West Indies in 1975.[2] Since then the stadium has replaced the Brabourne Stadium as the main cricketing venue in the city. It was named after the MCA's President Barrister Seshrao Wankhede in 1974.
The Wankhede Stadium is the home of the Mumbai Indians franchise in the Indian Premier League.[3] The venue is also a Test, One Day International (ODI) and Twenty20 International (T20I) venue. It has a capacity of 32,000 spectators.[4] The ground has hosted 24 Test matches, the first in 1975 when India played the West Indies. It has also staged 20 ODI matches, the first of which was in 1987 when India beat Sri Lanka by 10 runs.[5][6] Four T20Is have been played at the ground, the first of which was in 1987 when India lost to England by 6 wickets.[4][7] Of the 20 ODIs played at the stadium, three matches (including the final) were staged during the Cricket World Cup in 2011.[8]
In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five-for" or "fifer")[9][10] refers to a bowler taking five or more wickets in a single innings. This is regarded as a notable achievement.[11] The first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in a Test match at Wankhede Stadium was Lance Gibbs in 1975, for the West Indies against India in the second innings of the very first Test match to be held at the venue. India's Karsan Ghavri was one wicket short of a fifer in the first innings. During the fourth innings of the same match, Vanburn Holder also took a five-wicket haul. The first Indian to take a five-wicket haul in a Test at the Wankhede was Bishan Singh Bedi, who did so in a game against New Zealand in 1976. With four five-wicket hauls in Test matches at the ground, Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha has taken the most fifers. Ian Botham, Laxman Sivaramakrishnan, Monty Panesar and Ojha have each taken a five-wicket haul in both innings of a single match. In total, there have been 40 five-wicket hauls in all Test matches held at the Wankhede Stadium.[12]
Four bowlers have taken one five-wicket haul each at the ground in ODIs.[13] The first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in an ODI match was Winston Benjamin, for the West Indies against Sri Lanka in 1993. In 2002, Harbhajan Singh became the first Indian bowler to take a fifer in an ODI match at the ground, and also the only bowler to have taken a five-wicket haul in both the Test and ODI format. Murali Karthik's six for twenty-seven runs in a ODI versus Australia in 2007 are the best figures by a bowler at the ground in the fifty over format.[13]
The best bowling figures in the T20Is staged at the ground are South African bowler Chris Morris' four wickets for twenty-seven runs. The best figures by an Indian bowler in T20Is, and second best figures overall, are Yuvraj Singh's three for seventeen.[14]
