As of 31 December 2011, there are 1382 functioning jails in India having a total capacity to house 3,32,782 prisoners.[1]

- Rajahmundry Central Prison, established in 1864 is the Oldest of the Jail Buildings in India. It was originally the Dutch Fort of 1602. [2]
