Lucknow Junction railway station (official name Lucknow NER, station code LJN) is one of the two main railway stations of Lucknow city for broad gauge trains. The adjacent and almost contiguous railway station to Lucknow Charbagh railway station officially known as Lucknow Junction or Lucknow Jn NER (station code LJN), is unofficially considered a part of Charbagh railway stations.. It is situated at Charbagh in the south of the city, hence the popular name. The words 'Char Bagh' refer to the four gardens which existed here earlier.[1] Lucknow Junction (LJN) is well connected with all important cities like Banglore, Chennai, Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Jammu Tawi, Guwahati, Chandigarh, Pune, Jaipur and Bhopal. The station has six platforms. Lucknow Junction Railway Station is enabled with Wi-Fi from 14 March 2015 inaugurated by GM, Rajiv Misra.

History

Colloquially, it is known as "Chhoti Line", historically it harboured NE Railways' Meter Gauge trains of erstwhile Izzatnagar Division, now falls under Lucknow Division of NE Railway. It has recently taken over Rajya Rani Express and the prestigious train of Lucknow NR Lucknow Swarna Shatabdi Express. Earlier Lucknow junction was the terminus for metre gauge trains as almost all tracks of North Eastern Railway zone were metre gauge. With the conversion of most of these tracks to 1676 mm broad gauge under project Unigauge, the Lucknow junction does not have any metre gauge tracks. Now the terminus for the remaining metre gauge trains is Lucknow Aishbagh junction (station code ASH). Lucknow Aishbagh junction also has broad gauge tracks.

Major features

Cabway

The platform number 6 is accessible to the two wheelers, auto rickshaws and cars through an underpass cabway. This cabway was inaugurated on 15 October 2011. The cabway has been built at a cost of Rs 16 crore. The drivers of four-wheelers will be charged Rs 50 for two hours while those of three-wheelers and two-wheelers will be charged Rs 30 for half-an hour and Rs 20 for two hours respectively. This cabway is third cabway of Indian Railway after Howrah and Gorakhpur railway stations. It usually caters the trains of long distance. It is the terminus station for broad gauge trains of North Eastern Railway just like Howrah, Chennai Central and Mumbai CST. Therefore trains that enter this station have to reverse their direction to get out of the station even if the train's destination is beyond Lucknow. It is a separate building, with a distinct identity with red sandstone, but almost a continuation of the main LKO (Northern Railways) station building.

Battery Operated Cars

For the convenience of passengers North Eastern Railway zone has started to operate two battery powered cars at Lucknow Junction railway station. With the battery powered cars moving from the main concourse of the junction station to platform area will be easier for passengers finding it tough to walk the long distance, courtesy battery-operated cabs. The cabs will be four-seater for passengers, senior citizens and the physically challenged, for easy movement within the station. They can even carry luggage up to 90kilos at the back. Lucknow's Former MP Lalji Tandon took up the initiative and released money for the two cabs from the MPLAD fund. Cabs are available at the front concourse from where passengers can hire the vehicle to reach the platform they want to. This Cab service will be provided free to senior citizens and the physically challenged.

Wi-Fi Enabled Station

Lucknow Junction Railway Station was enabled with Wi-Fi from 14 March 2015 inaugurated by GM, Rajiv Misra. Passengers on the railway station will get wi-fi services free of charge for 30 minutes after which they would be charged, divisional railway manager Anoop Kumar said. This service is being launched by the North Eastern Railways. The facility, he added, would be available to people after they purchase platform tickets and in a 50-metre area in and around the railway station.
