Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, known in Europe and Australia as Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros.[4] and in Japan as Mario & Luigi RPG Paper Mario MIX (Japanese: マリオ&ルイージRPG ペーパーマリオMIX Hepburn: Mario & ruīji RPG pēpāmario MIX), is a role-playing video game developed by AlphaDream and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. The game is the fifth title in the Mario & Luigi series, crossing over with elements and style of characters from the Paper Mario series. It was released internationally in December 2015, and in North America on January 22, 2016.[5]
Plot
While attempting to fix a hole in Princess Peach's castle library, Luigi trips and accidentally knocks over a mysterious book containing the Paper Mario world, causing the paper-thin residents within it to spread across the Mushroom Kingdom. Afterwards, Bowser combines his evil army with that of his paper counterpart, Paper Bowser, and they kidnap Peach and her counterpart, Paper Peach. Mario and Luigi must now team up with Mario's counterpart, Paper Mario, to set everything right, defeat both Bowsers, and bring all the paper people back into the book.
Gameplay
The story of Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam crosses together the universes of the Mario & Luigi and Paper Mario series, the aftermath of Sticker Star and Dream Team, resulting in the sprite-based residents of one universe meeting their paper-thin counterparts from the other. As such, players control a team consisting of Mario, Luigi and Paper Mario, whose actions are controlled by pressing A, B and Y respectively. In addition to the moves Mario and Luigi can perform in their series, Paper Mario can use his paper thin body to perform his own unique actions, such as squeezing through tight gaps or turning into a paper airplane in battle to help the brothers. Like previous games, battles incorporate various mechanics, such as timing attacks or using "Bros. Attacks". During battle, Paper Mario can make copies of himself, allowing him to deal extra damage or attack multiple enemies at once, as well as use special techniques called "Trio Attacks" that involve him, Mario and Luigi to attack together. There are also sections where players control giant papercraft versions of Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Yoshi and fight other papercraft enemies.
Bros Attacks
Red Shell: This bros attack is similar to that of the red shell attack in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. It involves Mario taking out a red koopa shell and kicking it at a selected enemy. It is activated with the A button. The shell will strike the enemy and bounce off in Luigi's direction; thereafter it is luigi's turn to kick the shell. The shell is kicked back and forth for a few times until Mario is ready to give one final kick. The shell gives off a yellow glow when Luigi is about to kick it. Instead of hitting the enemy again, it will spin to Mario and if executed correctly, Mario will kick the shell one final time for a more powerful kick to end the attack.
Fire Flower: Another bros attack from the previous game in the Super Star Saga. This attack is activated by Luigi with the B button in which he powers up both himself and Mario with a fire flower. The bros take turns tossing fire balls at enemies in rapid succession. If enough fireballs are thrown by the bros without too many mistakes, both will exclaim in unison, and the player can hit both the A and B buttons together in rapid succession to attack the enemies with many larger and more powerful fireballs to deal more damage.
Mega Thwonk: Luigi's final bros attack in the game. Luigi will take out a Mega Mushroom and eat it once the player is ready to execute the attack by pressing the B button. Upon consumption, Luigi will grow enormous and take out a massive hammer. Mario will jump onto the hammer and prepare for Luigi to start charging. The player must press the B button everytime Luigi stomps on the ground. Luigi will pick up his pace the more successfully timed stomps he makes and thus the B button must be pressed in faster succession. Just before Luigi reaches the enemy selected, the player must press the A button to cause Luigi to swing his hammer at the enemy and send it flying or else Luigi will trip and fall causing him to drop his hammer and deal only minimal damage to the enemy. All surrounding enemies will be hit with some damage as well. Mario will fly from the hammer and will stomp on the enemy which was targeted. The player must hit the A button at the right time to stomp the enemy four times before finally forcing the enemy to the ground and thus causing the enemy several small hits from sliding damage as Mario grinds the enemy into the ground to finish the attack. Mega Luigi in the Mega Thwonk bros attack is animated to look strikingly similar to Mega Luigi in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team during the giant battles.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam holds an aggregate score of 76/100 on Metacritic, indicating generally positive reviews. Polygon awarded it 6.5 out of 10, saying "Those desperate for a dose of Mario could do far worse, but it's hard to look inside this machine without seeing what's gotten tangled up inside."[12] Destructoid awarded it 8 out of 10, saying "While it sometimes holds your hand for a little too long and at times fails to take proper risks, it was consistently polished, enjoyable and memorable."[13] Gamespot awarded it a score of 6 out of 10, saying "As Dream Team and Sticker Star proved, Nintendo has a knack for showcasing new and inventive ideas in both series. Paper Jam effectively relies (and often coasts) on its novel crossover appeal. Bold experimentation will have to wait, perhaps in an installment where, conversely, Mario and Luigi visit Paper Mario’s world."[14] Jared Petty of IGN awarded the game 5.9 out of 10, calling it a "a bland 30-hour odyssey."[15]
