Muhammad Abdullah Salique, or Mohammed Abdus Salique, (born 1 August 1951) is a British Labour Party politician, former councillor of Bethnal Green North ward and mayor of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets from 2008 until 2009.

Early life

Salique was born in the Sylhet Division, East Bengal (now Bangladesh). He then moved to Tower Hamlets, London, England as a child. He attended a primary school in Spitalfields.

Career

Salique is a qualified youth, community and social worker within the borough, including working and teaching with young people at Tower Hamlets College.

In May 2006, Miah was elected councillor for Bethnal Green North in the Tower Hamlets Council election.[1] On 22 May 2008, Salique was appointed as the new mayor of Tower Hamlets, and his deputy appointed was Ahmed Omer - a Bow East councillor.[2][3] He is the fifth Bangladeshi mayor of the borough. His new position is to chair council meetings and promote and support the borough through a variety of civic engagements, including representing the Queen as First Citizen of the borough, hosting events and welcoming visitors such as other Royals of all ships visiting the local docks.

As the mayor of Tower Hamlets he has represented himself in many awards and ceremonies. On 22 July 2008, he has presented people with British citizen certificates at a Citizenship Ceremony at Banqueting House, in Whitehall. The ceremony involved forty people from different countries pledging an oath of allegiance to the Queen.[4] He has also visited the Billingsgate Market at the fish market run by the City Corporation, with Lord Mayor of the City of London David Lewis which he paid the traditional rent of one salmon to Salique.[5] Salique selected the Child Concern Consortium as his Charity of the Year,[6] and invited the charity to the Christmas Charity Ball at the East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf.[7] On 28 May 2008, he has also attended the Award Ceremony of the Brick Lane Youth Development Association (BLYDA) and Elite Youth at Mulberry School for Girls.[8]
