Mongla (Bengali: মংলা) is an Upazila of Bagerhat District in the Division of Khulna, Bangladesh.

Geography

Mongla is located at 22°29′00″N 89°36′30″E / 22.4833°N 89.6083°E / 22.4833; 89.6083 . It has 27192 households and total area 1461.22 km².

Demographics

According to the 1991 Bangladesh census, Mongla had a population of 137,947. Males constituted 54.73% of the population, and females 45.27%. The population aged 18 or over was 77,995. Mongla had an average literacy rate of 42.8% (7+ years), compared to the national average of 32.4% literate.[1]

Mongla Upazila with an area of 1461.22 km2, borders Rampal Upazila on the north, the Bay of Bengal on the south, Morrelganj and Sarankhola Upazilas on the east and Dacope Upazila on the west. The main rivers are Pasur and Mongla.

Mongla (Town) stands on the river Pashur. It is the second biggest seaport of the country. It consists of 9 wards and 13 mahallas. Mongla municipality was established in 1991. The area of the town is 17.79 km². The town has a population of 60561; male 57.27%, female 42.73%. The density of population is 2943 per km2. The literacy rate among the town's people is 53.6%. The town has one dakbungalow.

The population is 137947, 54.73% of whom are male and 45.27% female. 71.31% of the population are Muslim, 24.95% Hindu 3.74% follow other beliefs.

Arts and Culture

There is a public library, two cinema halls, an auditorium, two cultural organisations, eleven rural clubs, seven playgrounds and a rural theatre group.

Administration

Mongla thana was established in 1976 and was turned into an upazila in 1983. It consists of 1 municipality 7 union parishads, 37 mouzas and 77 villages.

Religious institutions

There are 84 mosques, 29 temples, two tombs and 11 churches.

Education

The literacy rate is 42.80%, comprising 49.6% among males, and 34.2% among females. The educational institutions comprise four colleges, 20 high schools, a junior school, 32 government primary schools, 29 non-government primary schools, five satellite schools and 18 madrasas, the most noted of which is St Pauls High School.

According to Banglapedia, Mongla Bandar Secondary School, founded in 1987, is a notable secondary school.[2]

Media

The newspapers and periodicals are the Daily Sundarban and weekly Mongla. Main occupations Agriculture 21.41%, fishing 6.23%, agricultural labourer 12.41%, wage labourer 13.39%, commerce 15.09%, transport 1.94%, service 16.27%, others 13.26%.

Land use Cultivable land 12565.76 hectares, fallow land 611.79 hectares; single crop 99.03%, double crop 0.86% and treble crop land 0.11%.

Value of land Market value of first grade of land is Tk 2000 per 0.01 hectare.

Main crop Paddy.

Extinct and nearly extinct crops Coconut, betel nut and sugarcane.

Main fruits Mango, black berry, lemon, palm and papaya.

Fisheries, dairies and poultries Fishery (shrimp) 760, poultry 60 and frozen fish processing 1.

Communication facilities Roads: pucca 17.50 km, semi pucca 23.50 km and mud road 211 km; waterways 70-nautical-mile (130 km).

Traditional transport Palanquin (extinct), horse carriage and bullock cart (nearly extinct), country boat.

Industries: Cement factories 4, LP gas 2 (another 3 are under construction), Petroleum oil refinery 1 and edible oil 1.

Cottage industries Ice factory 10, rice mill 6, blacksmith 15 and wood work 100.

Hats, bazars and fairs Hats and bazars are 17, fair 1, most noted of which are Khan Jahan Ali Hat, Midhakhali Hat and Chandpai Mela.

Main exports Fish.

NGO activities brac, asa, caritas and World Vision, Chalantika yubo society.

Health centres Upazila health complex 1, family planning centre 6 and private hospital 3.

The port of Mongla

There is a sea port at Mongla. It is 2nd sea port in Bangladesh. Basically it derives with Poshur chanel.it has situated beside sunderban forest.Sundarban is one of the biggest mongrov forest in the world.
