Moon Mountain is a 2014 Graphic novel adapted from Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay's classic Chander Pahar. The graphic novel is published by Penguin Books India, has its script written by Saurav Mohapatra with illustrations by Sayan Mukherjee[1][2]
Synopsis
It is the tale of Shankar Roy Chowdhury and his friend Diego Alvarez, a middle-aged Portuguese explorer, as they make their way through the rugged wilderness of pre-World War I Africa in 1909-1910 and encounter wild beasts, lost tribes, labyrinthine trails, raging volcanoes, and mythical monsters that seem all too real, while in search of the fabled diamond mines of Richtersveld, the mountain of the moon.
Main characters
- Shankar Roy Chowdhury - The main protagonist of the story, a young Bengali man from a village in Bengal. He is a smart, brave person who has a penchant for adventures.
- Diego Alvarez - A Portuguese explorer. He acts as a friend and mentor to Shankar, and together they try and explore the deepest reaches of Richtersveld for the Mountain of the Moon.
- Jim Carter - A British explorer, Alvarez's companion in his previous expedition. Alvarez revealed to Shankar that Carter was killed by the Bunyip while he and Carter were exploring the Mountains of the Moon.
- Attilio Gatti - An Italian explorer. He discovered the diamond mine caves in c. 1879 but dies in a cave (later discovered by Shankar) on his way back, in the hands of his traitorous followers.
- Tirumal Appa - Another Indian man, who was a colleague of Shankar at Uganda. He will be dead by a Lion.
- Bunyip - An ancient creature and the conservator of the cave, where the diamonds are present. Bunyip acts as a minor threat to Shankar and Alvarez in the story.
Plot
Shankar, an ordinary boy with extraordinary dreams of adventure, finds his way to Africa. His encounter with the harsh wildlife there leads him to a Portuguese explorer, Alvarez, who fills his mind with stories of hidden diamond mines in Richtersveld. He invites Shankar to go with him on a journey to find fortune and live out the adventures that he is longing for. From there on begins a journey filled with adventure. Raging volcanoes to the mythical Bunyip, nothing stops the duo from finding their fortune.
