The Department is also responsible for the evidence-based assessment of state significant development applications. In 2013/14 the Department approved major projects worth $13.5 billion.

The Department is the lead agency in the Planning and Environment cluster, led by Secretary Carolyn McNally. The cluster's portfolio ministers are the Minister for Planning, the Honourable Rob Stokes MP, the Minister for the Environment, Minister for Heritage, and Assistant Minister for Planning, the Honourable Mark Speakman MP, and the Minister for Local Government, the Honourable Paul Toole MP. Ultimately the ministers are responsible to the Parliament of New South Wales.
