The New South Wales Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure and Services, commonly called NSW Trade & Investment, a department of the New South Wales Government, is responsible for driving sustainable economic growth in the Australian state of New South Wales. The department does this by working with and supporting the vast range of businesses and industries across the State to advance investment, innovation, activity and improvements across all industry sectors.

The Department is led by its Director General, Mark Paterson AO. The Department is responsible to the Deputy Premier, Minister for the Arts and Minister for Racing, presently the Honourable Troy Grant MP; the Minister for Industry, Resources and Energy, presently the Honourable Anthony Roberts MP; the Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events and Minister for Sport, presently the Honourable Stuart Ayres MP; the Minister for Regional Development, Minister for Skills and Minister for Small Business, presently the Honourable John Barilaro MP; and the Minister for Primary Industries and Minister for Lands and Water, presently the Honourable Niall Blair MLC. Ultimately the ministers are responsible to the Parliament of New South Wales.

Responsibilities

The goals of the department are to improve the performance of the NSW economy, drive economic growth in regional New South Wales, increase the competitiveness of doing business in New South Wales, secure potable water supplies, and enhance cultural, creative, sporting and recreational opportunities.^[1]

Structure

The department has three key agencies that are involved in the delivery of services and the development of policy:^[2]

NSW Department of Primary Industries, which includes the NSW Food Authority
Resources & Energy, and
Industry, Innovation, Hospitality & the Arts including the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing.

In addition, the department has a number of supporting divisions and agencies, such as the Office of Coal Seam Gas and divisions responsible for Audit and for Finance, Strategy and Operations. The department is also responsible for administering the Land and Water Commissioner, the Small Business Commissioner, Destination NSW and the NSW Chief Scientist and Scientific Engineer.

Although reporting to their own governing Boards, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Australian Museum, the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, the State Library of New South Wales and the Sydney Opera House are all jointly responsible to the Director General of NSW Trade & Investment.^[2]
