Born and raised in a traditional middle-class family in Manjeri, Malappuram in Kerala and completed his schooling. He graduated in Commerce from the University of Calicut in 1995. In 2004, he took a Master's in Business Administration and MA Public Administration (2008) from the Madurai Kamaraj University, Tamil Nadu.

In 2005, Sunish was posted as regional manager of Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation Ltd (a PSU under Department of Social Justice, Government of Kerala). In 2009, he was promoted to the post of managing director of KSWDC.[6] In January 2013, he took over as chief executive officer of Gender Park, Department of Social Justice, Government of Kerala, where he serves till date.
