Penanggalan (Dungeons & Dragons)

Penanggalan

In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, the penanggalan is a type of undead creature. It is based on the penanggalan, a ghost of Southeast Asian folk mythology.

Publication history

The penanggalan first appeared in the original first edition Fiend Folio (1981).[1]

The penanggalan appeared in second edition Advanced Dungeons & Dragons in the Monstrous Compendium Fiend Folio Appendix (1992).[2] The penanggalan was further detailed in "Necrology of the Penanggalan" in Dragon #222 (October 1995).

The penanggolan appeared in the third edition Oriental Adventures (2001), as a template, with a human as a base creature.[3]

Description

A penanggalan is an undead creature that can detach its head, which flies around looking for prey.
