Prince Oscar of Sweden, Duke of Skåne (Oscar Carl Olof; born 2 March 2016) is a Swedish prince and the younger child and only son of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and her husband Prince Daniel. He is the fourth grandchild and second grandson of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. He is third in the line of succession to the Swedish throne, after his mother, and his sister Princess Estelle, Duchess of Östergötland.[1]

Birth

On 4 September 2015, the royal court announced that Crown Princess Victoria was expecting her second child sometime in March 2016.[2]

Prince Oscar was born on 2 March 2016 at 20:28 CET.[3] He weighed 3.655 kg (8.06 lb) and measured 52 cm (20 in) at birth.[3] His names and title were announced the following day by his maternal grandfather, the King.[4] The birth was greeted by two 21-gun salutes on the island of Skeppsholmen, opposite Stockholm Palace.[5] Skåne is the southernmost titular duchy in Sweden and is known historically in English as Scania. There have been two previous Dukes of Scania in the House of Bernadotte, both became kings: Charles XV and Gustaf VI Adolf (Prince Oscar's great-great-grandfather).[6]

A Te Deum thanksgiving service was held in his honour in the palace's Royal Chapel on 3 March 2016.[7]

The name Oscar has Bernadotte roots, having been previously borne by two Swedish kings, Oscar I and Oscar II. It also was the name of Prince Oscar Bernadotte, Count of Wisborg, the father of Folke Bernadotte, whose American wife, Estelle, is believed to be the namesake of Crown Princess Victoria's daughter.
