Ramesh Pokhriyal "Nishank" (Hindi: रमेश पोखरियाल "निशंक"; born 15 August 1959)[1] is an Indian politician belonging to the Bharatiya Janata Party. He was Chief Minister of Uttarakhand from 2009 to 2011. He is a Member of Parliament in 16th Lok Sabha. He represents the Haridwar Parliamentary Constituency of Uttarakhand in Lok Sabha and is a senior member of the Bharatiya Janta Party.[2]
Early life
He was born to Parmanand Pokhriyal and Vishwambhari Devi at Pinani village in Pauri Garhwal district in Uttar Pradesh (presently in Uttarakhand). Ramesh Pokhariyal 'Nishank' was born in a poor family at village Pinani in District Pauri Garhwal of Great Himalayas. He obtained primary education from village school & High school certificate from Government Inter College, Damdeval. He was inspired with spirit of nationalism since his childhood. 'Nishank' obtained his higher education in Haridwar. He chose career of a teacher and writer. Right from his early age he has been dedicated to noble cause of serving Hindi literature. 'Nishank's first collection of poems 'Samarpan' was published in 1983 and he did not look backward since then. His 35 books have already been published so far.
Political career
He was elected to the Vidhan Sabha of Uttar Pradesh for the first time in 1991, from Karnaprayag constituency. He was elected again in 1993 and 1996 from the same constituency. In 1997, he became the Minister for Uttaranchal Development in the Uttar Pradesh state government. In 2002, he contested the Uttaranchal Vidhan Sabha election from Thalisain constituency but lost. He contested the 2007 elections to the Uttarakhand Vidhan Sabha from the same constituency, this time successfully.[1][3] In 2009 he was given the charge of the Minister for Medical Health and Family Welfare and Ayush. From 2014 onwards positions he hold :Member of Committee on Public Accounts, Chairperson, Committee on Government Assurances & Member of Standing Committee on Rural Development. On May 2014 he was Elected to 16th Lok Sabha.[4]
Chief Ministership
On 27 June 2009 he became the fifth Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.[5] Have been successful in curbing corruption and instilling discipline in the Departments in a short span of time.[6][7][8][9] Sorted out intricate and sensitive issues like inclusion of Hardwar and Udham Singh Nagar in the state of Uttaranchal with the aid of Political Skills, Knowledge and sound coordination skills.[10]
Literary Creations of Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’
‘Nishank’ is originally a literary personality. His creations published so far have established him as a leading figure in the world of Hindi literature. Through his literary Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ creations he has been able to inspire millions throughout the country and world. This is the prime reason for his inclusion as a national poet. The literature created by Nishank in Hindi has been translated in various languages including Tamil, Telagu, Malayalam, Marathi, and several other Indian languages.
Apart from this, his literature has also been translated in several foreign languages including German and English. Some of his literary creations are being inducted for study in several colleges in University of Madras, Chennai and Hamburg University Germany. Many M.Phil dissertation and Ph.D thesis hav been submitted on Nishank’s many prominent educationists including Dr. Shyam Dhar Tiwari, Dr. Vinay Dabral, Dr. Nagendra, Dr. Savita Mohan, Dr. Nand Kishor and Dr. Sudhakar Tiwari, Dr. Syed Rahamathullah, Dr. Kusum Dobhal ‘Mishra’, Dr. Navin Chandra Lohani, Dr. Radheyshyam Shukla, Dr. Yogendra Nath Sharma ‘Arun’ and others.
A large number of groups are actively conducting research on his literature at various international and national universities including H.N.B. Garhwal University Srinagar Uttarakhand, Kumaun University, Nainital Uttarakhand, Sagar University Madhya Pradesh, Rohel Khand University, Bareilly, Madras University, Chennai, Kurukshetra University, Haryana, Hamburg University Germany, Lucknow University and Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh.

On 10 December 2014, Nishank made another controversial statement saying 'Rupee grew stronger during NDA government and rose from 52 to 63'.[11]
