Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty (known as Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty in most PAL countries) is a 2008 platformer video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. The game is the second installment in the Ratchet & Clank Future series. It was released on PlayStation Network in Japan, North America and Europe on August 21, 2008[1] and on Blu-ray Disc in Europe on September 12, 2008[2] and in Asia on September 25, 2008.[4] The game continues from where Tools of Destruction left off, where Clank was kidnapped by the Zoni, and follows Ratchet's quest to find him. Due to its length of approximately three to four hours of playtime, it was released at a lower price point than most standard retail games. [5]

There is a download code for this game in all physical copies of Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus.

Gameplay

Ratchet uses a "Helio-Grub" in the new light/dark gameplay.

Gameplay was first shown at E3 2008. This game features more puzzle solving and platforming than previous games in the series and introduces new features, such as the ability to pick things up with the Omniwrench Millennium 12. There are also sections where Ratchet must pick up creatures called Heliogrubs in order to light up a dark area. The Omniwrench Millennium 12 also has a tether ability, which can be used to manipulate objects and move obstacles. The Combuster, Fusion Grenade, Nano Swarmers, Predator Launcher, Tornado Launcher, Shock Ravager and Alpha Disrupter make their return from Tools of Destruction.

Plot

After defeating Emperor Tachyon at the end of Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction, Clank has been abducted by the mysterious Zoni. Ratchet and Talwyn Apogee learn from the IRIS Supercomputer that the space pirate captain, Captain Angstrom Darkwater, is an expert on Zoni culture and travel to planet Merdegraw in the Drogol Sector to find him. On reaching the pirate fleet on the Azorean Sea, they learn from Darkwater's former crew that Darkwater is dead; trying to escape, the two are captured and placed in a cannon by the crew. The two are saved however by Rusty Pete, who attaches the mute head of his deceased former captain, Captain Romulus Slag (who Ratchet defeated in Tools of Destruction), to his body and banishes the two to Hoolefar Island.

Ratchet washes up on Hoolefar Island, where he sees a brief vision of Clank, before journeying with Talwyn to the main Hoolefoid settlement nearby. With the island's supply beacon deactivated, Ratchet manually activates five wind turbines and acquires a Versa-bolt from the Smuggler to reactivate the beacon. With the beacon working again, Hoolefoid Mayor Barnabus Worley reveals to Ratchet and Talwyn the existence of the Obsidian Eye, a powerful lorentzian telescope Darkwater built to contact the Zoni. Powered by a Fulcrum Star, the Eye is no longer operational since Darkwater hid the Star shortly before Slag mutinied and killed him at Morrow Caverns.

Rusty Pete arrives on Hoolefar Island and offers to help Ratchet obtain Darkwater's map from Morrow Caverns using Slag's head as a guide. During their traversal of the caverns, Talwyn is trapped when a door collapses; Ratchet and Pete travel on and reach Darkwater's ship. Pete then reveals his plan; he needed Ratchet to get past the dangers of the caverns in order to bring Slag back by combining his head with Darkwater's body. Slag is reconstituted, but triggers a curse that resurrects Darkwater's crew at their command, and also Darkwater himself who now shares his body with Slag. Ratchet and Talwyn escape and return to Hoolefar Island where they defend the Hoolefoids and the Obsidian Eye from "Slagwater"'s assault.

Having defended the island, Ratchet takes Darkwater's map to the Smuggler who translates it as a map to Darkwater Cove and offers to take them there. Navigating the tests Darkwater left to ensure intruders couldn't remove his treasure, Ratchet and Talwyn reach the main vault where the Star is kept, only for Ratchet to fall into the vault's trap. Slagwater and Pete then arrive, and take the Star along with Talwyn. Ratchet navigates the caverns beneath Darkwater Cove, defeating Slagwater's enforcer Sprocket in the process, and flies with the Smuggler to Slagwater's fleet on the Azorean Sea.

Having freed Talwyn, Ratchet fights Slagwater and his crew across the fleet before Ratchet finally defeats Slagwater, killing Darkwater and rendering Slag as a living head on a stick. Pete dives in to rescue Slag, in the process giving Ratchet the Fulcrum Star. Both Ratchet and Talwyn return to Hoolefar Island where Ratchet activates the Obsidian Eye, and learns Clank's fate: the Zoni have him in alternate dimension, where he is malfunctioning and in suspended animation. The Zoni reveal that they have hired a doctor to repair Clank - none other than Doctor Nefarious, Ratchet and Clank's former archenemy. Ratchet and Talwyn set off to rescue Clank, and the game ends with Rusty Pete reading it as a story to Slag's head, which didn't want to hear the story, and demands that Pete find him a new body.

1UP.com's Nick Suttner described the game as "a rollicking few hours, polished to a sheen and even better-paced than its full-length predecessors, although Booty tromps off with its own side story, ending on the same cliffhanger with little more resolved." Suttner also expressed that the game looks slightly better than Tools of Destruction due to improved lighting and better textures.[10]

IGN reviewer Jeremy Dunham says "Quest for Booty has been designed as a quick four-hour experience and it feels shortchanged because of it. Though its shooting and platforming sequences are fun and of high production, it still seems like there's something missing," but said that "there are some really cool puzzles and new gameplay elements."[13]
