History
The district derives its name from Rewa town, the district headquarters, which is another name for the Narmada River. The district with its present boundaries came into existence in 1950 after the promulgation of the Provinces and states (Transfer of ENCLAVES) order 1950. Prior to August 1947 the district, along with the Raghurajnagar tehsil of the erstwhile Rewa state, corresponded to the north Rewa district of that state. The territories now included in the district were held by the imperial Maurya dynasty which ruled in the 3rd century B.C. In the advent of the Kalchuris from the 9th to the end of 12th century. The Baghela king driven eastwards by Ulugh Khan, brother of the emperor Alauddin in the 13th century appeared in this Baghela kings till the abdication of the Crown by the last successor of the dynasty, Martand Singh. After the country became independent, the Rewa ruler acceded to the Union of India. The present Rewa district came into existence in 1950.
Before independence, hunting tiger was considered honorable in India. Once the Rewa King went for hunting, and he found very odd white colored tiger, who was named Mohan. Later Mohan was sent to others to continue his breed and today all white tigers are Mohan's heir. This is why Rewa is much more famous in the entire State. A famous Rewa leader, Shri Nivaas Tiwari, was called White Tiger of Rewa. Authorities have planned now to make a zoo in Rewa for the name of White Tiger which has been under dispute. Now the first white tiger safari cum Zoo is established by National zoo Authority of India in "Mukundpur", which is ready for opening.
FREEDOM STRUGGLE 1906-1942 : During the latest backstage drama unfolding at the center regarding the specified enclosure of files regarding Subash Chandra Bose case . The central committee on pre-independence files recently enlisted the series of 124 books and authors who were prevented by British Raj from doing any revolutionary activities all over India . Rewa also got to hear a truly inspiring story which was earlier unknown. Martand Press Of Rewa run by Pandit Ram Bharose Awasthi was instrumental in publishing India's first national anthem and national song 'Vande-Mataram' in 1927 which was distributed in the Tripuri session of Congress in Jabalpur.[4] This led to the seizure of printed books from Allahabad and Jabalpur and the revolutionary activities were crushed.
