Previously he coached Jackson Memorial High School in Jackson, New Jersey where he coached four state champions.[1] Rutgers has had nine All-American wrestlers. David Winfrey is the university's only National Champion. He won the title in 1950 at 191 pounds.[2] On July 1, 2014, all Rutgers sports programs joined the Big Ten Conference.

The 2011 Rutgers Scarlet Knights wrestling team is ranked 15th in the first NWCA/USA Today Division I Team Coaches Poll for the 2011-12 season. The Scarlet Knights return seven dual starters and six NCAA qualifiers from last season’s record breaking squad. RU won a program-best 21 duals in 2010-11. Rutgers wrestling has five individual wrestlers ranked in Intermat’s first poll of the 2011-12 season. The recent preseason ranking tabbed RU wrestlers Mario Mason (Moorestown, N.J.) and Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) in the top 10 nationally in their weight classes, with Mason at fifth at 149 pounds and Winston at sixth at 165 pounds. Rutgers wrestlers also in the top 20 of their weight classes were 125-pounder Joseph Langel III (Howell, N.J.), 141-pounder Billy Ashnault (South Plainfield, N.J.) and 174-pounder Gregory Zannetti (Edison, N.J.).
