Redlands, is an independent, co-educational, day school, located in Cremorne, New South Wales, Australia.

The school is non-selective and currently caters for approximately 1500 students from Redlands House Early Childhood to Year 12.

Redlands is a member of the Association of Independent Schools NSW, the Independent Schools Association, and the Council of International Schools.

Redlands has four different houses in which the students are placed into when they arrive. The houses are Roseby, McDouall, Cowper and Dumolo. Family members are placed in the same house.

Throughout the year there are three carnivals: swimming, cross country and athletics which students must attend. For each event, students are awarded house points depending on the place a students achieves and at the end the points are added up and the winner is announced.

History

Established in 1884 as a school for girls (and boys in the younger years) and run by the Misses Liggins and Arnold until around 1910, Redlands later established an association with the Anglican Diocese of Sydney and became the Sydney Church of England Girls Grammar School, Redlands in 1945 — hence "SCEGGS" and, later "SCECGS". Redlands severed legal ties with the Anglican diocese in 1976, and was re-constituted as a wholly independent school. The current name is Redlands, Sydney Church of England Co-Educational Grammar School, though it is more commonly referred to simply as Redlands. Redlands turned 130 in 2014.

The Sydney Anglican Association

The formal link with the Sydney Anglican diocese was severed in 1976; SCEGGS, Redlands (as it then was), SCEGGS Darlinghurst, SCEGGS, Wollongong and SCEGGS, Loquat Valley survived by re-constituting themselves as wholly independent entities, severing their legal ties with the Anglican diocese while retaining the "Church of England" title in their corporate names. SCEGGS, Moss Vale, was unable to recover, and closed. Loquat Valley became a member of the Sydney Anglican Schools Corporation

Former association with past SCEGGS girls' schools

The Latin school motto of Redlands, Luceat lux vestra, is taken from Matthew 5:16, translates "Let your light shine." It appears in the school song which was shared with the other SCEGGS schools:

Girls of the Grammar School, those old and new
Gathered or parted, all the world through
Still to the motto that binds us keep true:
Luceat Lux Vestra.

After the collapse of the SCEGGS school network, and Redlands' admission of boys in 1978, the first line of the SCEGGS song was altered at Redlands to "Students of Redlands School, those old and new...."

School governance

Since the Sydney Anglican SCEGGS schools collapse, Redlands has been independently owned and operated by SCECGS Redlands Limited — a public company limited by guarantee. The role of the Board is to oversee the management and business of the company, and in particular to:

Academic offering

Redlands offers the International Baccalaureate as well as the New South Wales Higher School Certificate. The 2011 academic year provided some of the most impressive results in recent years: 93 of its 139 Year 12 members received an ATAR score of over 80 with the average International Baccalaureate mark an ATAR of 95. Two of its students managed to score an ATAR equivalent of 99.65. The school has gradually accumulated further academic reputation, with several students entering Oxford, Cambridge and Yale over previous and recent years.

Recent past and current developments

Redlands now occupies two campuses in Sydney, including the former Cremorne Girls' High School site, which it purchased from the New South Wales government in 1989. This site used to house Junior and Middle School aged students, however in 2011 the Middle School students moved to the Senior campus to allow increased available play space on Junior Campus for K-6 students.

The school operates Redlands House Early Childhood at Cremorne and Balgowlah North, and also operates an experiential outdoor education site, the High Country Campus, in Jindabyne NSW.

Peter J. Cornish, was appointed Headmaster in 1980, and is credited with returning the school to financial security and academic respectability in the period 1980 to 2001. Peter Cornish was formerly Deputy Headmaster of The Armidale School, and previously an English master at SCEGS (Shore), both Anglican boys' schools. He emphasised academic achievement, as well as developing numerous sport and co-curricular opportunities. Peter Cornish cultivated an association with several neighbouring Anglican parishes, including the immediately adjacent mainstream Anglican parish of St Peter's, Cremorne, and indeed the school continues use of the parish church as the Senior School chapel. On Foundation Day, 2007, the Governor Phillip Building was renamed the Peter Cornish Building, in recognition and honour of his achievements and progressions in the school. The Boys 1st IV Rowing boat was also named in his honour at a ceremony on 16 March 2008.

At the end of 2006, Christopher Daunt Watney, former Headmaster of Redlands, concluded 10 years at the School. Mr. Neil Tucker temporarily filled the role until the end of 2007. In July 2007 the Board announced the appointment of Dr Peter G Lennox as the Principal of Redlands from early 2008.

In 2007, the school celebrated the completion of refurbishment of the Senior School Science laboratories and renamed the building "Roseby" - in recognition of the school's longest serving Headmistress (1911–1945) - Miss G A Roseby. The board also announced the naming of "The Adams Centre" (former Cremorne Post Office) building on the southern side of Military Road.

A fibre-optic cable connects the Junior and Senior campuses, and the backbone extends through the Senior Campus which together with a wireless network system, enables increased learning effectiveness, improved network utility, and World Wide Web and internet resource access to be faster, reliable and efficient.

In 2010 the school completed the Redlands Fitness Centre which is now used regularly by a majority of Redlands students to improve their fitness.

In 2010-11, a twelve million dollar radical development was undertaken on the Murdoch St Campus as part of the Federal government BER program and school borrowings. The 1960s three storey building was demolished to make way for the new home for the Margaret Roberts Preparatory School (K-2)and an all purpose sports and assembly hall. The development now features a state of the art playground, larger 2400 square metre oval and new enclosed ball games court for students to play on. The school is now divided into a Redlands House Early Childhood (preschool) and K-6 on the Murdoch St Campus; and a years 7-12 on the Military Rd Campus. The Murdoch St Campus is now named "Junior Campus" and Military Rd Campus named "Senior Campus".

In 2012-13, the school is exploring and developing ideas for longer term re-development of the Senior Campus.

House system

Redlands has four houses. Each student wears a house badge on their blazer as well as having a sports top with the appropriate house emblem on it. Each house is named after a notable family or person linked with the school's history. House pride is most prominent at the school's yearly Swimming Carnival, Athletics Carnival and performing arts night - Gala Arts.

Cowper (Colour: Gold and blue) Named after the Cowper family who have been active for generations in support of the Sydney Anglican Church.Cowper was for many years the Honorary Treasurer of the S.C.E.G.G.S. Group of Schools.

Dumolo (Colour: Red and blue) Miss Dumolo was the first Headmistress of S.C.E.G.G.S., North Sydney Branch from 1911 to 1923.

McDouall (Colour: Green and blue) Dr. McDouall supported and helped the school and was a school councillor in earlier years.

Roseby (Colour: White and Red) Miss Roseby was the Headmistress of Redlands School from 1911 until 1945. In 1911 Miss G. A. Roseby became the owner and Headmistress of Redlands and led the school for the next 34 years until her retirement in late 1945.

Sport

Redlands is a member of the Independent Schools Association (ISA), also competing against the Athletic Association of the Great Public Schools of New South Wales (AAGPS) in some sports. The school offers both representative and non-representative sports, with students being required to compete in one representative sport a year (either Summer or Winter).
In the Senior School, many students participate in Basketball and Netball, with the boys and girls 1st's basketball teams recently winning their ISA competition in 2009. And in 2010 the boys 1st XV rugby team and girl Ist Netball team winning their grand finals.

The school's rowing program is now situated at Mosman Rowing Club, Pearl Bay for on water training, after an arson attack destroyed the shed at Tambourine Bay in 2007.
