Sean Gares, better known as Sgares or Seang@res, is an American professional Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player formerly playing for Cloud9 and now currently playing for the team Echo Fox.

Life

Gares completed college and got a bachelor's degree in medicinal biochemistry from the Arizona State University before moving on to play professional Counter Strike with his first team Emazing Gaming[3] in 2009.

Career

Sean "Sgares" Gares had his first big Counter-Strike team in 2012, which consisted of the players Kory "Semphis" Friesen, Brennan "ele1Nt" Webster, Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert, Braxon "swag" Pierce, and himself.[4] This team went ahead and won the ESEA Invite Season 11.[5]

Gares gained fame when Counter Strike: Global Offensive came out in 2012. He moved to Complexity Gaming with the roster consisting of Spencer "Hiko" Martin, Braxton "swag" Pierce, Jordan "n0thing" Gilbert, Kory "Semphis" Frieson, and himself. This team together had many impressive finishes including a 3rd-4th place finish at Dreamhack Winter 2013, the first ever CS:GO Major.[6] At this time Complexity was considered the best Counter Strike team in North America. However, when Complexity lost Pierce,[7] they also lost that title. Pierce was replaced by Todd "anger" Williams. This team didn't manage to have the same power as the original lineup, however they still remained a close second. In the summer of 2014, Cloud9 acquired the Complexity roster.[8] They also dropped Williams and acquired Mike "shroud" Grzesiek. Martin, disappointed with the team's lackluster results, left the team in January 2015 and was replaced by Shazeeb "ShahZam" Khan.

Things went pretty poorly for Gares and the Cloud9 team with Khan until iBUYPOWER was banned in March 2015.[9] This meant that Cloud9 was the best team in North America. Later on, Cloud9 made a huge roster change removing Khan and Frieson, and replacing them with Ryan "fREAKAZOiD" Abadir and Tylar "Skadoodle" Latham.[10] This was the most famous lineup that Gares was on as he was the in game leader and captain of Cloud9. He led his team to the finals of ESL ESEA Pro League Season Finals, Faceit 2015 stage 2, and the Electronic Sports World Cup 2015. With this new line up Cloud9 won almost every event in North America. During this time, the team acquired a huge fan base. However, the team's performances dropped off over the year until finally Gares left the team in November 2015,[11] where he announced that he would be taking a break from professional Counter-Strike. However he shortly revealed in January 2016 that he will be returning to the game with his new team Echo Fox[12][13] made up of A2z, Moe, Tck, and Ryx. This team qualified for the 2 million dollar E-League on TBS.
