General elections are scheduled to be held in Somaliland on 27 March 2017 to elect the President and House of Representatives.[1] Incumbent President Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo will not be running for a second term.
Background
Parliamentary elections were due to be held in Somaliland in September 2010,[2] and were eventually scheduled for 26 June 2015,[3] but due to the unpreparedness of the National elections Committee the Guurti extended the incumbent's term for a period of 21 months in early September 2015.[4] In November 2015 Musa Behi was selected as the presidential candidate for the ruling Peace, Unity, and Development Party. The presidential candidate for the Justice and Development Party will be Jamal Ali Hussein. Hussein became the party's candidate after party leader Faysal Ali Warabe announced his intention to not run again after losing two previous elections. However, Warabe remains leader of the party.[5]
