Thakor

The Thakor (Gujarati: ઠાકોર) are a caste found in the state of Gujarat in India. In some areas of Gujarat, Kolis are called Thakor. Usually they copy the surnames and names from the Rajput community of the Saurashtra region and called themselves Bapu or Darbar. However, they are different from the Rajput and Darbar.^[1]^[2]

History and origin

The Thakor claim to have originated in Gujarat. They are found in the districts of Mehsana, Patan, Ahmedabad, Banaskantha, Gandhinagar, Kheda, Anand, Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Panchmahal ,Sourashtra and Baroda. Due to the process of Sanskritisation, the community resembles many other quasi-Rajput groupings such as the Kathi also found in Gujarat. They have a number of clans, called Ataks, the chief ones being the Makwana, Solanki, Parmar, Jhala, Chauhan, Vaghela, Dabhi, and Jadav, all of which are also pre-existing Rajput clans. Such naming aims to suggest a common origin with the Rajput community. Like other neophyte Hindu communities, they maintain the custom of clan exogamy.^[3]
