The British School is a state primary school situated in Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, England. It was established in 1835.[1][2] The headteacher Jane Clarkson who took up her position in September 2012
History
The British School was founded in 1835 by a Non-Conformist foundation. The first headmaster was Sir Isaac Pitman.
Relocation
The British School was originally sited on the corner of Bear Street and moved to Wortley Road in 1971. The present buildings, which were completed in 1990, provide facilities for all aspects of primary education and are surrounded by playing fields and landscaped gardens.
House system
All children are allocated to one of three houses - Jenner, Pitman and Tyndale. These are named after three famous local people. Edward Jenner developed the smallpox vaccine, Sir Isaac Pitman developed the shorthand system (commonly known as Pitman shorthand) and William Tyndale who first translated the Bible into English.
