Tibasosa (Spanish pronunciation: [tiβaˈsosa]) is a town and municipality in the Colombian Department of Boyacá, part of the Sugamuxi Province a subregion of Boyaca.
Historical review:
Tibasosa is a former pre-Columbian town prior to the conquer, it was a town of Indians ruled by the cacique who depended hierarchically by the powerful lord of Tundama and worshiped the high priest of the province of Iraca. In the Indian etymology Tiba means captaincy, So devil worshiper and Sa illustrious name person. The discovery and conquest of the lands of this municipality took place in 1539 when Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada eager to know the rich temple of the sun entered to the Valley Iraca.
On December 19, 1778 the Viceroy Manuel Antonio Flores issued a decree founding the town of Tibasosa, he named an ideal mayor to govern and manage fairly. The new parish of Our Lady of the Rosary of Tibasosa, chooses to Don Jeronimo Bayona to do so. In those days, people from distant lands settled in this village for its great weather, also arrived several families of distinguished Spanish origin. Witness to this are the still existing colonial two-story houses with elegant balconies.
Tibasosa acceded in 1781 to the Movement Comunero of Socorro and San Gil, first Independence Uprising. The army left the village to join the troops of General Don Juan Francisco Berbeo of Zipaquira.
The population of Tibasosa helped also enthusiastically to the pro-independence cause, marking a great patriotism in the memorable day of Pantano de Vargas. In Tibasosa the great hero Inocencio Chincá died wounded in the Battle of Vargas. On March 30, 1820 the liberator was in Tibasosa, he was heading towards Santa Rosa de Viterbo.
