List of rice varieties
Worldwide there are 40,000 varieties of rice, species name Oryza sativa. Here are some of the common and popular varieties.
Major categories
There are four major categories of rice worldwide: Indica, japonica, aromatic and glutinous.[1]
African varieties
- African rice (not Oryza sativa but a different species, known as Oryza glaberrima)

- Ofada Rice (grown in Ofada Town, South-west Nigeria)

- Doongara - semi-dwarf long grain, hard cooking (high amylose)
- Illabong - semi-dwarf arborio style
- Koshihikari - tall short grain Japonica style
- Kyeema - tall long grain, fragrant
- Langi - semi-dwarf long grain, soft jade cooking (low amylose)
- Opus - semi-dwarf short grain Japonica style
- Reiziq - semi-dwarf medium grain
- Sherpa - semi-dwarf medium grain
