The University of Gibraltar opened in September 2015.[1] It is the first university in the territory of Gibraltar,[2] and cost around £10 million to create.[3] It was formally established in July 2015,[4][5] and is chaired by Jose Julio Pisharello.[1]

The university is modeled on the University of Seychelles. In 2014, the latter announced a partnership for collaboration and student exchanges with Gibraltar.[6] The University of Gibraltar hosted the 19th Calpe Conference in September 2015.[7]

The university, situated on Europa Point, was formally opened on Monday 21 September 2015 and classes commenced on 28 September 2015.

The university has four faculties:

During its inaugural year the university will provide the opportunity for part-time studies, with full-time studies prospectively available as of September 2016.[8]

In March 2016 the University of Gibraltar had a reported enrollment of 230 students, besting by 40% the enrollment figure projected when the university opened six months previously. [9]
