Victoria R. "Vicki" Calhoun is an American recording artist, actress, and former backing vocalist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and with rapper Young MC. Following her success as a backing vocalist, she has published her own discography and formed the Vicki Calhoun Band.[1][2] She has also been an educator and administrator in higher education.[3]
Career
Victoria R. Calhoun was born in Orange County, California.[1] Calhoun attended Laguna Road Elementary School for primary education. She attended Ladera Vista Junior High for secondary education and graduated from Fullerton Union High School. After graduating from high school, she attended Fullerton College and received an Associate degree in Liberal arts education.[3]
Following her education, she joined Orange County punk-funk bands Doggy Style and Double Freak. Calhoun became a backing vocalist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.[4] She debuted in their album Mother's Milk in 1989, and the song Knock Me Down became number six on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks. She was a backing vocalist on several other Mother's Milk songs.[5] In December 1992, Calhoun signed a deal with her producer Amp Fiddler along with Chrysalis/EMI Records, and published her own single Sock It to Me in February 1993. She auditioned for a part in the movie Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit.[1] After success with her discography, Calhoun started her own band called the Vicki Calhoun Band.[6]
Following her recording and singing career, Calhoun continued her higher education at Loyola Marymount University where she received her Masters of Arts in Teacher education. She worked at Golden West College in administrative office, as well as for the City of Fullerton.[3] In 2013, Calhoun ran for candidacy as a school board member for the Fullerton Joint Union High School District.[7]
