Xavier Institute of Social Service (XISS) (Hindi: जेवियर समाज सेवा संस्थान (एक्सआईएसएस)) is a Jesuit-run business school in Ranchi, India. It was established as an extension department of St. Xavier's College, Ranchi, in 1955 by Fr. Michael A. Windey, S.J. with the objective of training young men and women in Rural Development, Personnel Management and Industrial Relations.[4] In 1963, Fr. Micheal Van Den Bogaert, S.J. was appointed as the director of XISS and rendered his service to the institute for 23 years.[5] In 1973 the institute was registered as a separate educational society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. In 1978, it moved to its present site.[6]
XISS is governed by a governing body headed by a chairman from the Ranchi Jesuit Society. The governing body is supported by an academic advisory council of senior faculty and directors.[7] In the Times Group B-School survey 2016, Xavier Institute of Social Service is ranked 119th overall among the business schools in India.[8]
History
Xavier Institute of Social Service was established in 1955 as a center for social service at St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi. It was named after the Jesuit Saint Francis Xavier for his missionary work in India. XISS was established with the mission to develop human resources for various sectors such as industries, business, rural development, health care etc. in the Chota Nagpur region. Both the founding director Fr. Michael Windey and his successor Fr. Bogeart were Belgian Jesuit missionaries who contributed significantly to the Jesuit mission in India from their youth. Fr. Windey established the Village Reconstruction Organisation (VRO) in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh after having officially ended his career as a professor and teacher in 1971, to fully give himself to the poor helping them in the reconstruction of villages due to natural disasters.[9]
In the early 1970s, Fr. Bogeart made an extensive tour of the rural areas of Chotanagpur meeting with tribal youth and established the Vikas Maitri to assist the tribal youth financially in their higher studies. This organization is active to date in the rural areas of Chotanagpur. Influenced by the welfare works at Ranchi, he started PG diploma in Rural Development in 1974. In 1986, Fr. Bogaert joined the team of Jesuits assigned to start Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar. He also started the Xavier Institute of Development Action and Studies (XIDAS) in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh in 1995. Hence XISS gave him his own agenda of doing something special for rural development in all these places.[10]

Candidates are required to apply separately to the institute with their required course preferences as soon as the registration process for admission begins, which will be mentioned on the college website. The candidates obtaining the cut-off score will be shortlisted for the subsequent Group Discussion-Personal Interview (GD-PI) held across various places in India. Based on their performance in both the test and (GD-PI) the institute releases the list of the selected candidates on its website.[14]
