YouTube Rewind is a video series produced and created by YouTube, and Portal A Interactive. These videos are an overview and recap of each year's viral videos, events, memes and music.[9] Each year
History
The first Rewind was created by YouTube in 2010 and featured a Top 10 list of the most popular YouTube videos for that year. In 2011 YouTube, had started to create and produce Rewind videos with the help of Seedwell, and Portal A Interactive.[3][7][10] From 2011 and on the YouTube Rewind video's have only been uploaded to the YouTube Spotlight channel, with behind the "Behind-the-scenes" content as well.[10]
2010–2011
On 12–13 December 2010 the first YouTube Rewind was uploaded named "2010 YouTube Rewind: Year in Review" It featured the Top 10 most popular videos on YouTube for past year. It was uploaded on two channels: YouTube Trends on the first day,[2] and YouTube Spotlight on the second.[1]
On 20 December 2011 "YouTube Rewind 2011" was uploaded,[7][8] it was created and produced by YouTube and Portal A Intercreated [7] It features Rebecca Black as the host. At the time, her music video Friday had become a viral video in late 2010.[7][11] It featured another Top 10 most popular videos on YouTube for the year.[10]
2012 to present
In 2012, YouTube's Rewind video's changed from a Top 10 list; to featuring several popular YouTubers, the most popular music and videos into, mashed up mashup (music), and video's, Breaking news and Internet memes, from the year. In 2013 the Rewind Button/logo was created.[12]
On 17 December 2012, "2012 Rewind YouTube Style 2012" was uploaded to YouTube Spotlight.[13] It was created and produced by YouTube, and Seedwill.[3]
On the 11 December 2013 "YouTube Rewind: What Does 2013 Say?" was uploaded to YouTube Spotlight.[4] It was created and produced by YouTube, and Portal A Interactive.[4] It was the first year that the YouTube Rewind Button was used, it was otherwise very similar in style to the 2012 video. Jordan Roseman aka DJ Earworm composed.He used and mashed up six songs from the year. Jimmy Fallon, and The Roots from The Tonight Show, had a guest appease as well.[4]
On 9 December 2014,[5] "YouTube Rewind: Turn Down for 2014" was uploaded to YouTube Spotlight. It was again created and produced by YouTube, and Portal A Interactive. With over 10 songs were mashed together and composed by DJ Earworm[5][14] for the video.[5] It was not structured around mainly songs, as with the previous years. More internet memes and trends were used alongside the music. Its main features are YouTube Rewind Button flag. With YouTuber's and characters running with it, it starts at the beginning of the video all the way to the end. The flag was run through the sets of Colbert Report by Big Bird, Conan by Conan O'Brien; running through his own with Freddy Wong acting as the host, and the set of Last week tonight with John Oliver, by Kid President. The actual Rewind Button is not shown until the end of the video.[14]
On 9 December 2015,[6] "YouTube Rewind: Now Watch Me 2015 | #YouTubeRewind" was up uploaded to the YouTube Spotlight channel. It was again created and produced by YouTube, and Portal A Interactive. It was the first one to have a hashtag along with it.[6][10] On 23 April 2015 was YouTube's 10th year of hosting videos on the internet.[15] The video heavily incorporates the past 10 years of YouTube into the video. The music mashup was composed by The Hood Internet. Additionally Avicii also composed an original remix for the video.[6][10]
The video features more gamers' than previous years like; YouTube personality Markiplier. It was set up too resemble the indie survival horror point-and-click video game; Five Nights at Freddy's. A game that gained huge amounts of recondition, and popularity from its first release in August 2014. The Rewind Button and logo are shown throughout the video. Its main appearance is with Felix Kjellberg, and Zoe Sugg about halfway through the video. They are next to a scoreboard with two dates of 9 December 2015. Zoe changes one scoreboard date back to 14 February 2005 leaving the other at 9 December 2015. Afterwards Felix "Brofists" the rewind button triggering the video to show past viral videos, and memes from 2015 back to 2005. After the credits, the Fine Brothers are shown arguing about if "PewDiePie" was in the video.[10]

YouTube Rewind 2010: Year in Review
The first video in the series, YouTube Rewind 2010: Year in Review, was uploaded by YouTube Trends channel on December 12, 2010. The official Spotlight channel uploaded the same video the next day, subsequently gaining more views. The video for "Bed Intruder Song", by Antoine Dodson and The Gregory Brothers was revealed to be the #1 video of 2010.
YouTube Rewind 2011
In 2011, Rebecca Black was center-premise of the video, having presented the video, and having her music video for "Friday" be revealed as the #1 YouTube video of 2011.
Rewind YouTube Style 2012
In 2012, PSY's "Gangnam Style" and Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe", were the basis of the annual video. Unlike previous years, several popular YouTubers made guest appearances in the video, including PSY himself.[17] References to the 2012 U.S. Presidential election, Felix Baumgartner, and NASA were made in the video.[18]

YouTube Rewind: What Does 2013 Say?
The 2013 YouTube Rewind is the fourth video release of the YouTube Rewind series. It released on December 11, 2013 via YouTube's official channel, YouTube Spotlight and was directed by Kai Hasson and produced by Nate Houghteling, Zach Blume, Jeffrey Sabin-Matsumoto and David Iain Johnson. It was produced by the Portal A studio.[19]
The title is a reference to Ylvis' song "The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?)", which is also the main motif of the video. However, other 2013 trends, events, viral videos and headlining topics has been featured and referenced, such as the music videos of "Blurred Lines", "Wrecking Ball", "Applause", "Roar". The Breaking Bad series finale, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's album The Heist, and the "Harlem Shake" meme were also referenced.[20][21]

YouTube Rewind: Turn Down for 2014
On December 9, 2014, YouTube Spotlight released "Turn Down for 2014" (reference to "Turn Down for What" by DJ Snake and Lil Jon) as the fifth installement. It was directed by Kai Hasson and shot in the Portal A studio.[22]
The video includes notable events, chart hits and memes of 2014, featuring references to the Ice Bucket Challenge, The First Kiss viral video, The Devil Baby, Spider Dog, Minecraft, Disney film Frozen, the music videos of "Turn Down for What", "#Selfie", "Happy", "Fancy", "All About That Bass", "Anaconda" and "Dark Horse", as well as the game of the year 2014 Flappy Bird.

Celebrity guests include Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, John Oliver, Chris Hardwick, Conchita Wurst, and Conan O'Brien.
In total, over 120 YouTube content creators appeared in the video include Jenna Marbles, PewDiePie, Danisnotonfire, Amazing Phil, Connor Franta, iJustine, Tyler Oakley, Bethany Mota, HolaSoyGermán, The Slow Mo Guys, Smosh, iiSuperwomanii and Kid President.[23] Along with the "Turn Down for 2014" video, YouTube also released two playlists namely- "Top Trending Videos of 2014" and "Top Trending Music Videos Of 2014" on the "YouTube Rewind Channel". On December 9, 2015, YouTube Spotlight released "Now Watch Me 2015." The video featured actors from 129 YouTube channels. The video's references to events of 2015 include Legality of Same-sex marriage in the US, Shia LaBeouf's "DO IT!" clips, Super Bowl Left Shark, Five Nights at Freddy's games, Pizza Rat,[24] Carpool Karaoke, Drake's Hotline Bling and the blue and black / white and gold dress.
