The 1940 Railway Cup Hurling Championship was the 14th series of the Railway Cup, an annual hurling tournament and organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association. The tournament took place between 25 February and 17 March 1940.

Three team teams participated in the inaugural championship. These included three of the four historic provinces of Ireland, Connacht, Leinster and Munster

The tournament was won by Munster.
