The 2002–03 season was the Grizzlies second season in Memphis and the eighth being a team in the National Basketball Association (NBA).[1] Hoping to improve upon a 23—59 record, the Grizzlies improved by five victories, finishing sixth in the Midwest Division with a 28—54 record. Their first game was against the Dallas Mavericks on October 30, 2002, and the Grizzlies lost 108—119. This would lead to a thirteen-game losing streak. The Grizzlies got their first win against the Washington Wizards on November 23, 2002 by a score of 85—74. Their final game was against the Minnesota Timberwolves on April 16, 2003, which the Grizzlies lost 87—95.

After a losing eight straight games to start the season, head coach Sidney Lowe was fired and replacing him was 69-year old Hubie Brown, who last coached the New York Knicks midway through the 1986–87 season.
