The 2013–14 season was the 133rd season of competitive football by Rangers. The club competed for the first time in the Scottish League One as well as competing in the Scottish Challenge Cup, Scottish League Cup and the Scottish Cup.
Month-by month-review
May
On 6 May Rangers Legends beat Manchester United Legends 4–1 at Ibrox Stadium in a charity match with proceedings going to the Rangers Charity Foundation and UNICEF.[1]
On 21 May Rangers announced that Andrew Mitchell signed a new one-year contract.[2]
On 22 May Rangers announced the pre-contract signing of former Kilmarnock goalkeeper Cammy Bell on a four-year deal upon joining.[3] [4] On 24 May Rangers All-Stars were held to a 0–0 draw by United Services Recreation Club in their opening match of the HKFC International Soccer Sevens.[5]
On that same day Rangers announced the pre-contract signing of former Motherwell player Nicky Law on a three-year deal.[6]
Also on that day Rangers announced the pre-contract signing of former Dundee United captain Jon Daly on a two-year deal.[7]
On 25 May Rangers Under 20's beat HKFC Soccer Section 1-0 with a goal from Fraser Aird in the HKFC International Soccer Sevens.[8]
On that same day the Rangers Under 20's clinched their place in the Quarter-finals of the HKFC International Soccer Sevens with a winner in the final seconds to defeat HKFA Dragons 2–1 thanks to goals from Charlie Telfer and Luca Gasparotto.[9]
Later that day Rangers Under 20's were contained by South China AA in their final group game of the HKFC International Soccer Sevens and the 0–0 draw meant they finished runners-up in their section.[10]
Also on that day Michael Mols scored a hat-trick and set up the other two goals from Jorg Albertz and Charlie Miller as the Rangers All-stars beat the Kowloon Cricket Club Veterans 5–0 in game two of their HKFC International Soccer Sevens campaign.[11]
Later that day Marvin Andrews scored two goals but Rangers went down 3–2 to Aegon AFC Ajax All-stars in their final Masters group game at the HKFC International Soccer Sevens.[12]
On 26 May Rangers All-stars qualified for the Semi-finals of the HKFC International Soccer Sevens after a 2–1 win over a Citibank All-stars team with goals from Alex Rae and Michael Mols.[13]
On that same day Rangers Under 20's reached the Semi-finals of the HKFC International Soccer Sevens after a 3–1 win over English Premier League Manchester City with goals from Robbie Crawford, Andy Murdoch and a Charlie Telfer penalty.[14]
Later that day Rangers Under 20's lost in the HKFC International Soccer Sevens to a Newcastle United side who won 3–2 to reach the Final they won last year. Rangers goals came from Robbie Crawford and Jamie Burrows.[15]
Also on that day Rangers All-stars qualified for the Final of the HKFC International Soccer Sevens with a 4–1 win over Eastern AA with goals from Alex Rae, Jorg Albertz, Michael Mols and Charlie Miller. In the final they face Aegon AFC Ajax All-stars in the final.[14]
Later that day Rangers All-Stars beat Aegon AFC Ajax All-Stars 2–1 to win the HKFC International Soccer Sevens Masters Tournament with goals coming from a penalty scored by Jorg Albertz and a goal from Alex Rae.[16]
On 28 May Rangers announced the pre-contract signing of former Queen Of The South forward Nicky Clark on a three-year deal.[17]
On 30 May Rangers announced that Walter Smith had been appointed Non-executive chairman of the Plc Board.[18]
June
On 3 June Rangers confirmed that Honduran midfielder Arnold Peralta agreed to join the club on a four-year deal.[19]
On 18 June Rangers announced that former player Steven Smith had rejoined the club on a two-year deal.[20]
On 19 June Rangers will kick-off the Scottish League One campaign against Brechin City at Ibrox on Saturday, August 10 after the fixtures for the 2013/14 season were announced.[21]
On that same day Rangers opened their new club store in Belfast.[22]
On 21 June Head of Sports Science Adam Owen left the club to take up a role working with ex-Rangers defender David Weir at Sheffield United.[23]
On 24 June the Rangers management team and the First team squad reported back to Murray Park for the opening day of pre-season training.[24]
On that same day Rangers announced Forward Kane Hemmings left the club.[25]
On 25 June Rangers announced that Richard Foster joined the club on a two-year contract.[26]
On 26 June Rangers announced that defender Darren Cole had signed a new one-year contract.[27]
On that same day Rangers opened their new club store in Glasgow Airport following on from the launch of the Belfast store on 19 June.[28]
On 27 June, Bruce's Coaches took delivery of a new team bus.[29] In July 2013, it was destroyed in a arson attack on Bruce's depot thought to be related to sectarianism.[30][31]
On 29 June Rangers announced that defenders Carlos Bocanegra and Dorin Goian were leaving the club after their contracts were mutually ended.[32]
On that same day Rangers appointed Jim Henry as their new Head of Sports Science following Adam Owen’s departure for Sheffield United.[33]
July
On 2 July Rangers appointed former player Gordon Durie as the Rangers Reserves and Under 20's new manager.[34]
On 4 July Rangers agreed a seven figure deal with Huawei to bring Wi-Fi to Ibrox Stadium.[35]
On 9 July Rangers appointed Greenock businessman James Easdale onto the Rangers board as Non-executive director.[36]
On that same day the PLC board announced that Non-executive directors Malcolm Murray and Phil Cartmell had left the board.[37]
Also on that day Rangers appointed Strand Hanson Limited as Nominated Adviser and Broker to the Company with immediate effect.[38]
On 12 July Rangers announced that Interim Chief Executive Officer Craig Mather was appointed on a permanent basis.[39]
On that same day Rangers launched the world’s first hologram sports app – Virtual Rangers.[40]
On 17 July Rangers announce that former director Jack Gillespie died at the age of 87. He was a Non-executive Director at Rangers for nearly 20 years.[41]
That same day Rangers announced that former boss Davie White died at the age of the 80. He was the fourth man to manage Rangers.[42]
On 20 July Rangers appointed Todd Lumsden as the Under 17's new manager.[43]
On 26 July Rangers announced that Bilel Mohsni had agreed a pre-contract with the club.[44]
On 25 July Rangers launched their new third kit for the 2013/14 season.[45]
On 27 July Rangers announced a new Rangers Business Alliance commercial initiative – By Official Appointment (BOA) – a first for a Scottish football club.[46]
On 29 July Rangers won their first game of the 2013/14 season with a 4–0 win away to Albion Rovers at Almondvale Stadium in the Scottish Challenge Cup.[47]
That same day Rangers took players Hameur Bouazza and Mamady Sidibé on trial.[48]
August
On 1 August former Rangers player Colin McAdam died at the age of 61.[49]
On 3 August Rangers were defeated 2–1 by Forfar Athletic in the First Round of the Scottish League Cup at Station Park.[50]
On 5 August Rangers announced that Walter Smith had resigned from his position as Chairman and a Non-executive Director of the Company.[51]
On 10 August Rangers won the first Scottish League One game of the season with a 4–1 win against Brechin City at Ibrox Stadium.[52]
On 13 August Rangers took goalkeeper Steve Simonsen on a one week's trial.[53]
On 20 August the Rangers Board had meeting that morning the and Club’s directors decided to terminate the consultancy agreement with Charles Green.[54]
On that same day Republic of Ireland youth international Sam Kelly joined Rangers on weeks trial.[55]
Also on that day Rangers announce that defender Darren Cole was asked to temporarily stay away from the club following a breach of discipline.[56]
On 22 August Rangers launched the Jim Baxter Walk of Fame brick panel on the Copland Road stand.[57]
On 28 August Rangers confirmed that Darren Cole had his contract terminated following a breach of discipline.[58]
September
On 4 September Rangers launched their new away kit for the 2013/14 season which would be available to purchase from 5 September.[59]
On 5 September Rangers took Lithuania internationalist Marius Žaliūkas on trial.[60]
On 6 September Rangers once again were chosen to host the UK Asian Football Championships at Ibrox Stadium which was held on 8 September.[61]
On 12 September Rangers midfielder Ian Black began serving an immediate three-game ban, while having seven matches suspended until the end of the season and must also pay a fine of £7,500 after admitting to a breach of Scottish FA regulations on football betting.[62]
On that same day Rangers announced a partnership with "E-Lites" electronic cigarettes.[63]
On 13 September Rangers signed goalkeeper Steve Simonsen on a one-year deal.[64]
On the same day, Andrew Mitchell went on a three-month loan to Annan Athletic and Scott Gallacher went on a 3-month loan to Airdrieonians.[64]
On September 14 Rangers appointed Greenock businessman Sandy Easdale onto the Rangers football board.[65]
On 18 September Rangers announced that defender Anestis Argyriou had mutually agreed to terminate his contract.[66]
On September 26 Rangers announced that a new, Ibrox Bar would be opening on the 28th of September in the Ibrox Suite against Stenhousemuir.[67]
On that same day Flamingo Land became the sponsor for Rangers TV's matchday commentary.[68]
October
On 1 October Rangers published their annual accounts for the period ended 30 June.[69]
On that same day Rangers appointed Daniel Stewart as Nominated Adviser and Broker.[70]
On 4 October Rangers postponed their match against Dunfermline Athletic for November 6 after the Rangers players received international call-ups.[71]
On 6 October Ally McCoist was voted Scottish League One Manager of the Month for September.[72]
On 9 October Rangers announced a new Platinum Sponsorship deal with M&H Logistics.[73]
On that same day Rangers installed a new artificial pitch at Murray Park similar to some of those Rangers had been playing league games on in both Scottish League One and in the Scottish Third Division.[74]
On 10 October the company announced that Ian Hart, Non-executive Director, had resigned from the board in order to pursue the charitable work in which he is involved more actively.[75]
On 11 October former Rangers goalkeeper Norrie Martin died at the age of 74.[76]
On 14 October Rangers had been forced to postpone their Annual General Meeting on 24 October after the shareholders, Paul Murray, Malcolm Murray, Ian Cormack, John Graham and Colin Howell wanted changes at board level and won a court decision.[77]
On 16 October Craig Mather had left his position as Chief Executive Officer of Rangers International Football Club Plc by mutual consent.[78]
On that same day, in a statement to the stock exchange, the club also announced the resignation of Non-executive Director Bryan Smart.[79]
On 19 October Kyle McAusland rejoined fellow Scottish League One club Ayr United for a second loan spell until January 18.[80]
On 30 October former Rangers player Dave MacFarlane died at the age of 46.[81]
On that same day former Rangers player Fernando Ricksen revealed on Dutch TV show, De Wereld Draait Door that he is suffering from Motor Neuron Disease.[82]
Also on that day, Ibrox Stadium was chosen to host this seasons Scottish Cup semi-finals on April 12 and April 13 as Hampden Park will be unavailable due to redevelopment work in preparation for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.[83]
November
On 1 November Rangers announced that Director of Communications Jim Traynor had left the Club.[84]
On 5 November Rangers were drawn away to Falkirk in the Scottish Cup 4th round which will be played on 30 November. [85]
On 7 November Rangers appointed former ACE Group director David Somers as Chairman and Non-executive Director.[86]
On that same day, Rangers postponed their match against Forfar Athletic for 3 December after the Rangers players received international call-ups.[87]
Also on that day, Rangers announced that their Annual General Meeting will be held at Ibrox Stadium on December 19.[88]
On 14 November Rangers appointed Scottish businessman Norman Crighton as a Non-executive Director.[89]
On 20 November Rangers appointed Scottish businessman Graham Wallace as Chief Executive Officer.[90]
On 27 November Rangers announced an exciting new partnership with Global Image Sports that will see the sports management company represent the club in North America.[91]
December
On 2 December Rangers were drawn at home to the winner of the Ayr United V Dunfermline Athletic replay in the Scottish Cup 5th round which will be played on 7 February. [92]
On 3 December Ally McCoist's Rangers broke the club’s post-war record for successive wins in competitive games after beating Forfar Athletic 6–1 at Ibrox.[93]
On 5 December Rangers masseur David Lavery left the club.
On 14 December Stenhousemuir postponed their match against Rangers due to high winds, flooding and a burger van hitting the temporary stand at Ochilview Park creating structural damage.[94][95]
On 19 December Rangers current board was re-elected following the club's Annual General Meeting at Ibrox Stadium. The requisitioners including Paul Murray, Malcolm Murray, Alex Wilson and Scott Murdoch did not secure the votes necessary to join the board and failed in their attempt to be appointed.[96]
On 21 December Rangers sent Calum Gallagher on loan to East Stirlingshire and Luca Gasparotto on loan to Stirling Albion until 19 January to give them extra match practice during the SPFL Under-20 League’s winter break.[97]
On 26 December Rangers 100% record in Scottish League One came to an end as Jamie Longworth scored the late equaliser for Stranraer in injury time.[98]
On 27 December Rangers sent Barrie McKay on loan to Greenock Morton until 26 January.[99]
January
On 10 January former Rangers player Ian Redford died at the age of 53.[100]
On 11 January Rangers employed Philip Nash as a consultant.[101]
On that same day Rangers boss Ally McCoist signed off on a pay cut of around 50% of his £825,000 salary, which he agreed to in October as part of cost-cutting measures.[101]
On 16 January the Rangers squad was asked to consider pay cuts of around 15% until the summer of 2015 as cost-cutting begins in earnest at Ibrox. The request, put to the players as a possible alternative to some having to be sold, was widely rejected.[102]
On 17 January Andrew Mitchell left Rangers on mutual consent after his contract was terminated.[103]
On 24 January Rangers announced that by mutual consent Brian Stockbridge had left the club and resigned as Financial Director of the company and its subsidiaries with immediate effect.[104]
On 29 December Rangers announced that Barrie McKay will spend the rest of the season on loan to Greenock Morton after paperwork to extend his temporary stay there was completed this afternoon.[105]
February
On 7 February Rangers L.F.C. head coach Angie Hind left the club to move to Old Dominion University in Virginia Beach as Head Women's Soccer Coach.[106]
On 9 February Rangers were drawn at home to Albion Rovers in the Quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup which will be played on 9 March.[107]
On 14 February Rangers manager Ally McCoist won Scottish League One manager of the month for January and for the second time this season.[108]
On 19 February Rangers were awarded the maximum six-star status by the Scottish Football Association in their 2013/14 Club Academy Scotland audit.[109]
On 20 February Rangers launched the Ready To Listen campaign which will be the Club’s initiative to enhance fan engagement.[110]
On 24 February The Board of Rangers announced that it entered into two secured short term credit facilities for an aggregate of up to £1.5m.[111]
On that same day Rangers released their Get Active With Rangers programme.[112]
March
On 9 March Rangers were drawn at home to Dundee United in the Scottish Cup Semi-finals which will be played on 12 April.[113]
On 11 March Rangers and Media House International Ltd announced that by mutual consent their current business relationship will end on March 11.[114]
On 12 March Rangers won Scottish League One with a 3–0 win against Airdrieonians at Ibrox Stadium with a Lee McCulloch hat-tick.[115]
On 27 March Rangers International Football Club plc announced their interim results for the six-month period to 31 December 2013.[116]
On 30 March Lee McCulloch, Fernando Ricksen and Nacho Novo were named as the 2013/14 inductees into the Rangers Hall of Fame. At a gala dinner at the Glasgow Hilton, it was also announced Dave McPherson, Johnny Little, Tully Craig and Jimmy Fleming were chosen as entrants from the 2012 nominees. The nine men selected as 2011 choices received their trophies either in person or through a representative. Ally McCoist accepted a Special Recognition Award on Sandy Jardine’s behalf for the former right-back’s service to the club.[117]
April
On 6 April Rangers were defeated 1–0 by Raith Rovers in the Scottish Challenge Cup Final at Easter Road.[118]
On 12 April Rangers were defeated 3–1 by Dundee United in the Scottish Cup Semi-finals at Ibrox Stadium.[119]
On 14 April Rangers announced a new shirt sponsorship on a three-year deal with casino company 32Red, starting from July 2014.[120]
On 16 April Lee Wallace, Jon Daly and Nicky Law were all named among the four candidates for the PFA Scottish League One Player of the Year award.[121]
On 18 April it was announced Cammy Bell, Lee McCulloch, Lee Wallace, Jon Daly and Nicky Law had been named in the PFA Scottish League One Team of the Year.[122]
On 24 April Rangers legend Sandy Jardine died after battling throat and liver cancer for 18 months. Jardine died aged 65.[123]
On 25 April Rangers issued the following summary of the Club's Business Review conducted over the last four months by Chief Executive Officer Graham Wallace.[124]
On 28 April Lee Wallace was named as Scottish League One Player of the Year at the PFA Scotland awards that night.[125]
May
On 3 May Rangers players made history by becoming the first Rangers side in 115 years to go an entire league season unbeaten after a 1–1 draw with Dunfermline Athletic.[126]
On 5 May Lee Wallace celebrated an award double after being named the Rangers Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year. Fraser Aird was also recognised for his efforts with the Light Blues over the last nine months as he took the Young Player of the Year prize. Elsewhere, Ian Black took the Goal of the Season award for his stunning left-footed strike against Forfar Athletic last month. Jon Daly collected the Sam English Bowl having finished 2013/14 as the club’s leading league goalscorer and Mary Gallagher, better known as Tiny, was given the John Greig Achievement Award for her contribution to the club as a staff member for the last 46 years.[127]
Friendlies and pre-season
Rangers preceded their 2013–14 campaign with a tour of the north of Scotland, followed by a training camp in Germany.[128] The club played two friendlies against continental opposition before returning to the United Kingdom to play English side Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough Stadium. Rangers concluded their pre-season campaign with a 1–1 draw against Newcastle United at Ibrox Stadium.

Competitions
As a Scottish League One club, Rangers entered the Scottish Cup in the Third Round and entered both the Scottish Challenge Cup and Scottish League Cup in the First Round. They will also compete in 36 league matches in the new Scottish League One.
