Netflix, in association with Paramount Television, announced its plans to adapt the novels into an original TV series with 13 episodes.[2] Author Daniel Handler will serve as executive producer.[7] On July 5, 2015 a video titled "An Unfortunate Teaser [HD]" was uploaded to YouTube by a user named "Eleanora Poe". Netflix quickly released a statement saying "This was not released from Netflix." Media outlets were almost unanimous in agreement that the trailer was fan-made,[8][9][10][11] but a blogger on CNET argued that the trailer may be real and that Netflix's carefully worded denial was a marketing campaign.[12]

Neil Patrick Harris will be the interpreter of Count Olaf in the series.[2]

On September 4, 2015, it was announced that filmmaker Barry Sonnenfeld and True Blood showrunner Mark Hudis had agreed to helm the series. Hudis will serve as showrunner, Sonnenfeld as director, and both as executive producers.[13] Daniel Handler is penning the scripts.[14] On December 3, 2015, an open casting call was announced for the roles of Violet and Klaus Baudelaire, with the casting call confirming that the series would begin production in March 2016.[15]

In January 2016, Netflix announced that Hudis had left the project and they have not yet named a replacement showrunner. However, it was announced that Sonnenfeld and Handler were both still on board, and that Neil Patrick Harris had been cast as Count Olaf and Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes are cast as Violet and Klaus.[2][3] On March 8, 2016, K. Todd Freeman was cast as Mr. Poe.[4] On March 14, Patrick Warburton was cast as Lemony Snicket.[5] On March 18, Aasif Mandvi was cast as Uncle Monty.[6] Production is slated to begin in May 2016.[16]
